i have a chance to get a used dart iron block in great shape for 1K, should i run it? since im building a 347 stroker and eventually twin turbos
Anything wrong with it? Do you know what combo the previous owner ran, or what might have happened that he is selling it now?
If all checks out, i would definitely grab it. See if he will let a machine shop give it a once over, even a visual inspection by a reputable machinist should give you the answer you need.
Either sportsman or iron eagle both are good. The IE is the better of the two but is not needed if your asking for more info on it, no offense. The sportsman is good for 1500 hp I believe. They are rated at continuous use, not a 7 8 or 9 second pass. If all is well with it jump on it. Very good foundation, good luck.![]()
What are the dimensions now, not before the previous owner had it machined?
Iron Eagle or Sportsman? Both are nice IMO, but the IE is much a better value at that price.
You should be looking for a bore not greater than 4.155" finished.
You might want to consider having the 302 size mains.
Look for broken studs.
4.185" bore is Dart's suggested maximum bore.Wow, I had no idea the Dart blocks could be bored out so large, I was under the assumption that max was 4.125", but now looking at the specs I see you can get away with a full 4.185".
My only worry is that pistons in those bore sizes would be expensive, but 1000$ is killer for a Dart block, so what you'd save there you could probably still be under budget with some expensive oversize pistons.
4.185" bore is Dart's suggested maximum bore.
There are many people taking them out past that with success.
My World Man o' War block will go to 4.200".
4.155" piston is actually one of the most common bore size, and there are many, many, many compression height, ring options, pin options for these pistons.
These pistons can be had for far less than 1000.00. Of course they will be OTS type, such as Probe, JE, Wiseco, Ross, Mahle, etc....
The only reason I said 4.155" max bore "finished" with an 8.2" deck block is, that would be the largest "cookie cutter" 347ci sbf.
Well, I'm no engineer... I don't want to lie to you, but IMO and experience, the larger the bore, the closer to the clamping force you become. Are head gasket sealing concerns an issue at that bore size (4.200")? I've always been curious.
If bore spacing is 4.38", that means you've only got .180" between holes. Doesn't seem like much.
i know its kinda old now but i did pick up the block and its beautiful
