I posted this in the 4-banger section, being that it's on a 4-banger, but there's a ton more traffic here and the problem, I don't think, is 2.3 or 5.0 specific. Thanks! :

My tach sits with the needle pointed at 6,000 rpm whether the egine is running or not and there's no backlight behind it. Where should I start checking to see what's wrong? I don't know if this is related, but there's an unplugged sensor hanging down next to the transmission and I haven't figured out where it plugs in. It seems like it's coming from the engine bay.

Your tachs bad. Get a new one or one from the boneyard. You have a burnout light or lights behind the tach. 2 problems one fix. When you pull the gauge cluster you can replace the lights and tach.
