I just got off the phone with the dealer. I called and asked about the cost to have them put in 4.10's on my 03 GT. He said I'd be looking at about 5-6 hrs (at $50 /hr.) + ~$200 in parts + ~$100 for fluid, so around $600 all together. Does that sound about right?

thanks,
dave.

No, that sounds $100 too high. Buy the gears yourself for $180 off of the internet or maybe a local parts store. Don't spend over $500, though. I paid $450 for all my ish in my old 'Stang with 4:10's.

Yea, get your gear from like gefracing.com or stangstore.com. I got mine from gef for $140. Luckily I have a friend who used to work at a speedshop and he did mine for $125 in like 1 1/2 hours. No way it should take 5-6 hours, that's just so they can rip you off!

Also if your car is a 99+ you will need to get the electronic speedcal from a place like dallas mustang for about a $100. If it's 98- then you can just get the regular speedo gear for cheap...

I actually haven't taken it to the dyno since I did my mods. There is a Speed shop down the road from me but just haven't had the extra cash to make some pulls. I hope to get some numbers soon though. My baseline stock was 230rwhp & 278rwtq.

Is the dealer going to warranty the install? If you can keep your drivetrain warranty after they install these gears it is probably worth the extra $100...this is of course if you still have warranty.

Yep, definitly worth the $100 to keep the warranty!!
When my rear end went out after my new gears were in it was nice to have the dealer swap the gears into a brand new shiny rear end for me, for free!!

Sorry for this side question and stealing the thread but does the aluminium driveshaft allow more of the crank HP to reach the wheels?

No, it only reduces the weight your engine has to turn to move your car, which will make it rev quicker

Since it revs quicker doesn't that mean less frictional loss which should translate into more free (rear wheel) HP?

Well, I’m holding off on the gear swap for now. I talked to JMS yesterday about installing gears and was told $400.00 for just labor. I’ll run these 3.27s from now on before I pay that much in labor fees.

i called like 5 reputable shops in Jersey that do rears. Cheapest price I got quoted for was $325 labor + fluid.

That's a blueprinted rear with 4.10 ring and pinion and a full rebuild including all bearings, etc. I could probably get it cheaper but I know this guy does good work so I'm going to go with him.

Can't wait till next week. Also getting a 4 tune superchip Should be fun

Your not kidding, I was absolutely shocked when he said $400.00 I puckered up and got off the phone as quick as I could. Now I’m back to square one looking for a shop to do quality work and there just isn’t any shops here, that I’m aware of, I can rely on.

Doesn't seem too far fetched to me. The typical gear set is about $185-$200. The kit to install the r&p is about $90. Labor at most light duty axle shops is about $130. Total $405. The beauty of having Ford do it, is your warranty is not voided. If you go to a third party axle shop, the cost will be cheaper but it will kill your Ford warranties if any are in effect.
