I am putting my motor back together. I bought some new cylinder heads and a new block. The heads have been shaved to 56cc combustion chambers. The block was decked to (I believe) 0...My vic jr manifold doesnt fit now...bolt holes line up on one side and they are 1/4-1/2" off on the other. It wont bolt down.

Is this a simple fix by milling the bottom of the manifold...or is something else possibly wrong...

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Jeff

When heads are milled more than a small amount to clean them up, the head manifold surface needs to be milled as well to maintain proper alignment.

So should I have the manifold surface (on the heads) milled or should I mill the manifold...?

Also, I take it I am correct in that SOMETHING needs to be milled and it is not some sort of misalignment anywhere?

The head manifold surface needs to be milled, but you need to find out how much the heads were milled so you'll know how far to go.

I've always had the intake surface done....not the head?
Regardless, anything more than about .030-.040 generally requires modification to the intake surface. If it's only out by a fraction of an inch, you might be able to elongate the bolt holes of the intake manifold with a rat tail file in order to make it fit, but if it's anymore than that, then you might have serious misalignment problems with the ports and/or water jackets.

yea you need to mill the lower intake head surface. I had to have that done when I have gotten my heads milled. You have to find out how much you got them milled and then you know how much to take off of the intake

I've always heard that when you mill the heads a lot you have to have the intake surface on the heads milled too, that way if you ever want to use a different intake you don't have to take it and get it milled.

See if the intake fits fine with no gaskets. (Bolt holes and ports that line up) If it does then mill off the thickness of the gaskets from the sides of the intake. It is not uncommon to mill the intake .060 per side.

It is close to fitting with no gaskets, but I know it will have to be milled. I would rather mill the intake as I already have the heads torqued down.

Plus, any motor I build from now on will be decked at least this much so I can keep the 12:1 or so compression ratio.

Thanks for all the input guys. The intake may have to be milled more than 60 though...probably 90-100

i didnt here this from anyone, this is my personal experience, you should take a die grinder and enlongate the intake bolt holes towards the center of the intake, start with 3/16 , grind more if needed, then set the manifold onto the lifter valley with the gaskets in place and look into all (with a good flashlight) the runners to check on port alignment before you do ANY milling of any surface, they might be closer than u think and probly wont requre any work
