Well guys, I just took home my first V8 Mustang! It's a 1990 GT. drove it home with no problem except that it wont go over 30 MPH, it wasn't such a deal since San Leandro is only bout 10 miles from Alameda.
Anyway i was hoping if you guys would help me determine what could be the cause of the car not going over 30 MPH, it would just rev higher if I try to go faster than that, i'm not really that familiar with automatics, let alone an AOD. any thought would help and thanks in advance!

Sounds like your tranny is slipping very bad. You may need to have the transmission rebuilt or buy a new one.

Did the tranny shift into/out of gears at all?

I bet it's the tranny, but it could be the torque converter. I can't recall the names but there is the impeller and turbine, but in the middle there is a plate of fines that has a oneway clutch on it, if that one way clutch either locks up or freewheels (can't remember which) it will either not accelerate but will cruise at speed, or it will accelerate but not cruise.

Go ahead and get a build tranny if your going to mod it. That or a manual swap.

while you are playing, check codes - always a good idea.

also after checking the fluid level, adjust the TV cable properly. go from there.

good luck and congrats on the stang. sounds like you are ready for a manual swap (or C4, etc).

Here's what I think you should do.......take it out of "1" and shift to the letter "D"....just wait and see how fast it goes then.

......sorry, couldn't resist.

well, it shifts from 1st to 2nd everytime, no problem cruising upto bout 30. though once i felt like it did shift to 3rd and went upto about 40 MPH, but only did it once.

Did the person who sold it to you indicate there were problems with the automatic transmission? Didn't you notice the issue when you test drove it? I'm afraid of what else you might discover once the tranny's fixed....

take it out of gear and rev it up, will it rev up fine. does it sputter. if so than i think that may be a bad fuel pump, my 95 did that and i couldn't make it up the dang hill. crank the car up and let it warm up in P. then check the tranny fluid for the correct level and color. also smell it for a nasty burned smell.

yes he told me all the deal that was going on with it specially the tranny, and oh yeah I noticed it while test driving it. most of the problem are minor stuff though ( cracked windshield, hatch support, pass. seat, rear shock) , and im not really concerned cuz almost all that stuff I can get at work at cost prices ( i'm a mechanic by trade, dont know transmissions though). everything else seems to be unmolested, specially the engine it's all bonestock

I havent even tried it ( afraid I might F it up more that it already is), I only paid $600.00 for it with only 102,200 miles, I think it's still a good deal even woth a bad tranny

It will rev up fine and doesnt choke, sputter or whatever, although i could hear the fuel pump whine a little (or is that how it really is? i'm used to mechanical pumps ). yeah tranny fluid is kinda dark too and smells burnt, level is OK though. I'll try and change tommorrow and hope for a miracle

If you're a mechanic by trade - you'll get it straightened out. Maybe trade a little time with one of your work-mates who does know transmissions.

I'd C4 it, cheaper than an AOD and better.

I wouldn't waste too much time or money on trying to get that tranny going. Usually isn't worth it.

Oh nad congrats on getting the Stang, hope you enjoy it

Well it sounds as if you've got a project car on your hands. I'd start by making a list of everything that sucks and go from there. If the car is as neglected as it seems to be (based on what you've said so far) then look real hard at the usual stuff after the obvious is fixed. Wiring, hoses, lines, all the stuff that you'd look for on a nose to tail tune up. Good luck with it.
