I'm thinking that 5.0s with the old 302 firing order were non-HO. The 5.0 with a 351W firing order got the HO label.

H.O. FIRING ORDER 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
S.O. FIRING ORDER 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

'86 and up S.O. are roller engines (at least according to Autozone)

Sounds about right, I've owned a non-H.O. roller, and have come across several more

The '82GT (flat tappet cam turd) had a HO 5.0 that was non roller. When Ford gave the HO label, was when they swapped to the 351w firing order for 302s. It might have been coincidence that Ford gave the 302 a HO label, at the same time they swapped the firing order, but no 5.0 HO has the old 302 firing order and no non-HO 302 has the HO firing order.

There have been what... 3 different heads used in 5.0 HO engines since '82 and at least as many cam changes

Keep in mind that the computers are different between HO and non HO engines to accomodate the different firing order.
