so i replaced the old shot 302 in my 70 with a "new" thousand mile 289. it has been a litlle over a year since i swapped it and parts have come and gone. the harmonic balancer i just put on is the one for the 302 and i don't want to risk harming the engine. will it hurt it or is it ok?

If the 302 is an original 70' model (not a 80's+) it will work fine on your 289 except the timing marks will be in a different place. You will need a pointer on the passenger side (use the one from the 70.) Also note that the 70' has a water pump that the lower hoses exit out on the driver's side. Although this pump is not necessary, it helps to see the passenger side timing marks. If this 289 is going in a 70' model, it will all work great.

Hope that's clear enough. . . . .

what i did was install the 302 timing cover and water pum p to alleviate any radiator hose issues (i had plenty with my radiator and the 289 front cover) and now i positioned the engine at top dead center and the marks are offset to the drivers side exactly where i cant see to put a pointer.

i could put a pointer on the passenger side but if it is not lined up when i aam at tdc would it not be uselss?

thanks matt

Sorry if all this seems confusing. Maybe I should have said in the beginning that in order to use a 289 in place of a 70 model 302, you need to swap these items from the 302 and put them on the 289.

1. Timing chain cover
2. Harmonic balancer
3. 4 bolt crankshaft pulley
4. Water pump

If this is what you did and it didn't work, read on and then answer a few questions so we can solve it.

Which side of the car do you need the lower radiator hose--driver's or passengers? The 70 should be on the driver's side.

I thought you said you already installed the 70's balancer. If your true TDC is on the driver's side, then the harmonic balancer is from a 69' or earlier model 289/351/351w. Does the pulley mount with 3 bolts??

In 1970 Ford swapped stuff around on the 302&351 and put the TDC pointer on the passenger side, moved the TDC on the balancer, and put the lower waterpump outlet on the driver's side. They also went with a 4 bolt balancer pulley. Check for a casting # on the balancer that begins with a C or a D and post it.

So, if you need the balancer TDC to be the passenger side, you will either need to find a 70 model balancer (all of which require 4 bolt pulleys) OR determine TDC using a piston stop/timing degree wheel and then remark the balancer where the new TDC will be.

The good news is that engine balance will not be affected as it is the same until the 80's on the 302.

Hope this helped clear it up.

Good Luck!
