bigger heads, cam and different firing order i believe between the H.O. and just the reg.=more hp.................... 400 hp could be achieved but you would have to put on some big heads and a nice cam and still without strokeing it you would prob need a power adder.

Let's see...

upper intake
upper intake cover plate
firing order (HO is same as 351W)
truck heads
forged internals (I think)

I think the computer is different and so is the wire harness but I'm not sure... If you take a look at my 1987 truck engine non HO 5.0 has about 140HP and an 1989 HO 5.0 has 225HP but the torque ratings might be the same.... honestly I don't know

THIS ARTICLE says "As delivered, the 5.0L H.O. engine installed in '87-'92 Mustangs was quite the little hot rod motor, with forged TRW pistons, a hydraulic-roller camshaft, and a double-roller timing chain--all stock"

It also says you can make 400hp with the stock short block.

fireing order

Quick question

I have a 5.0 non HO motor and want to build it to put it into my car. My question is about the fireing order I know it is different between the HO and the non HO motors. But to use the non HO motor in my car all I have to do is change the cam right to get the correct fireing order. From what I understand the crank is the same.

Thanks for the help.

Since the SO 5.0 has flattop cast pistons and the e6 heads if you change the cam and heads you might run into piston to valve clearance problems. Also its not a roller block so you'd either have to switch it over to a roller cam or use a flat tappet cam.

does this mean that when i looked up specs for my 84 5.0 HO lx and saw 165bhp for the 84 5.0 non-HO engine, that my car should have a bit more power than that? also, the torque for non-HO was 210 ft-lbs if im not mistaken, thanks

i had a 90 model f150 with the 5.0. that is the base motor i used on my rebuild(check my sig). it had efi but not mass air. the block is a roller ready block since it has the 2 threaded holes in the lifter valley for the spider bars, but it was not equipped with a roller cam. it had E7 heads which i had a 3 angle valve job on and reused. also the firing order was right on the intake and it was the same as the 351 but it was not the HO motor and it was a 5.0 since the upper intake said so. all that changes the firing order is the cam and the cranks are the same up to 86 or so, then they became a 1 piece rear main seal.
