Different grades of swirl removers and when to use them

Like the title says. I want to get some swirl remover products to level out my clear coat but i am not sure which one to get. mainly i am not really sure what conditions need to be present to use heavy duty swirl remover and when to use a light or intermediate?

Someone give me a breakdown. Gracias

I'm in the same boat as you. When I took my spoiler off, my decklid was abraded where the spoiler used to bolt down. I tried to take the marks off with scratch remover, and that didn't work. I stepped it up to polishing compound, but that didn't work either. The next step was rubbing compound, which did the trick, but now I can't get the scuffs from the rubbing compound off. What should I do?

Check out the autogeek.net forums they have a TON of info on detailing that's all those guys do.

Theres like a million differant kinds of polishes.


Basically,

you should try and buy like 3-4 differant polishes and a Porter Cable 7424 orbital.


I have a heavy compound, medium compound, and a finishing polish along with a bunch of other waxes/glazes.


Its pretty simple.....you just need to smooth out the surface with differant grades of polish.

I reccomend anything on autogeek.net

It can really vary by brand/product type but, in general, you want to use the least aggressive product possible. How good/bad is your paint to start with? Do you have light swirls or is it worse?

ive been doing a lot of research today. i basically am at the point where i shouldnt even purchase anything.

i have what seems to be clearcoat failure on my roof. dont know what its from - i wax the **** out of the car. i realize it can happen even if i take the best care of the car which is what i believe happened. the interesting thing though is that it doesnt really match the definition of CC failure as it isnt cloudy. its a silver dollar sized area on my roof. it probably is from a bird taking a massive crap on the car. problem with this though is that i dont remember this happening

honestly, i need to go home this weekend and take some Macro shots of my car so i can show people what i am talking about




swirl marks are a definite in the paint, as well as water stains

i also need something to even out paint color from decals sitting on the car for years

It sounds like your car needs some serious work...probably compounded and polished.

As a general rule, you always start with the least abrasive polish and the lightest cutting pad, and work up from there.

Many people like Menzerna products, myself included. All you really need from them is SIP (for bad swirls/scratches) and either 106FF or PO85RD for removing micro marring/halograms.

Top that off with a good sealant and LSP and you're done.

i agree and i am ready to tackle it as a project. i just dont want to rip the clear coat off in places from the clearcoat being delicate in the problem areas.

The bold items are the questionable ones.

PO85U has a cut of 3, which you really don't want in a final polish. Go with either the 106FF or the PO85RD instead. I used 85RD and it's good stuff.

The PO91E will probably be fine, but if your swirls/scratches are bad, you may have to step up to the SIP (85RD3.02) instead.

You don't need the glaze (115CQ) if you polish and finish properly. Glaze is more for hiding swirls, which should be taken care of when you correct.

Instead of the WG (I haven't read of many people using it other than on AG), consider this package instead:

The Jetseal is very popular and lasts a good amount of time. The 50/50 as a LSP is a great carnuba without getting stupid expensive. Both are very easy to apply and remove. You also get two good MF towels in the package, and at 78 bucks w/o shipping, it's a STEAL.

My LSP I already have Mother's Gold Class (I like it, will try something else at a later time). I also do have some Mother's Clay already. Megs UQD is also part of my arsenal too. I have about 10 MF towels as Advance Auto had a sale on them a month ago.

I went with the 5.5 pads exclusively now since its a compromise of both the smaller pads and the 6.5" pads.

Oh, if you can swing the extra money, get a Flex polisher instead. More power to remove the more stubborn swirls/scratches and still won't hard the paint.
