The camshaft in the pre-1985Mustang engines uses a flat-tappet cam that pushes directly on the pushrods.

In 1985, Ford changed to a roller camshaft in the Mustang which uses oil filled lifters to ride on the camshaft and then transfer motion to a shorter pushrod. The benefit is lower friction and the ability to have more aggressive camshaft profiles due to a roller wheel riding on the camshaft
