I've had great luck with Sony Cybershots, Fuji Finepix, and from the Kodak persuasion. I have no high res pics saved to show you, though.

My sister just got an olympus evolt e300 and its a really really really nice camera, though it was about a grand, probably way out of your price range. I would check out other olympus cameras though as the camera seems top quality.

If you want quality, stick with a good company. Olympus, Canon, Fuji, Nikon, and maybe Sony too. The downside to Sony is that you need to become married to the brand, as their memory cards are proprietary and incompatible with anything but Sony (a la Betamax). Kodak makes some good stuff too, and they make some cheaper ones.

If you want to go cheap as possible, then look off brand.

If you really wanna get into making a good decision, check out these sites:

http://www.dcresource.com/

http://www.dpreview.com/

But that kind of research is over kill if you are just looking for an entry level point and shoot, where you are good enough to just stick with a good brand.

The pics you see me post up are with a Sony CyberShot 3.2 MP. Also does movies. Pretty high quality pics. They can be had for around $150 now if you look in the right place. Pisses me off 'cause I paid over double that a couple of years ago ....

If you are at least remotely into photography, don't bother with anything but a D-SLR. I regret going cheaper and buying a Sony now. The top of the line Sony (V3 or F828) won't even touch a Canon EOS-350D (aka Digital Rebel XT in the states). You could find a used one for $400-$600. It seem like alot, but you'd make good use of it. Your pictures will shame everyone else's in yearbook, trust me

haha i wish i could spend that much man.....i researched it a lot last nite, and i'm decided on either the Nikon Coolpix 5.1 MP for $229 which my buddy has, and i LOVE it, or the Kodak Easyshare 4.0 MP for $199 which is tiny, and got great reviews, or finally the Canon Powershot (i forget the model #) but its real small and has great features. Anyone else have the Nikon that could lemme know how they like it?? I have used my buddies Nikon a few times, and teh pics are awesome quality.

I recently upgraded to the Kodak Easyshare 4.0. I am not sure if its the same model you are looking at but I love it. Great camera for the price. My old 3.2 HP camera was a great camera outside, took awesome pics. However, indoors it was horrible. Or if it wasn't bright outside. Pictures always came out dark reguardless of any setting changes. Just as a added tip - digital zooms suck, make sure you get optical zooms.

Both are fine companies, and you should be happy with either. As a general rule, Kodak aims their digicams at the point and shoot buyer. So they will be easy to use, with most of the stuff automated (though most of the important adjustments will be there). Nikon makes good stuff all around.

Compare the two options for features that you think you will use (ignore digital zoom - it's meaningless). Otherwise, I wouldn't stress over the final decision too much.

All of my pics come from a kodak easy share 5.0MP. I LOVE this camera. I only wish that I had a digi cam with more options, but that is only because I have really gotten into taking some cool photos. I'd like to be able to get some polarized shots, but it doesn't have any way of doing it. IMO I think my pics really come out great. I'll put up a few samples of my favorites here in a little bit so make sure to check back!

Here you go... These pics were all taken on the same camera, and are all 25% of the original size which is HUGE! The first few pics are from Aruba, then my car, and the last one is from Venice when I was there last year.

This isn't a real qulity pic, but just one week after this was taken this natural bridge in Aruba collapsed and is no more.
