dipstick?

ok so i changed my oil and i heard other advice on the forum that just says fill 5 quarts and remark the dipstick cause they are known for being off. So i filled my car with 5 quarts of oil and marked the dipstick to the REAL full line, but its a quart above the full original line on the dipstick, what happens if i put in too much oil? is the first mark right, or the new mark right? i put in 5 quarts, thanks for your help guys!

If it's any consolation, I have my own score marks on my dipstick too. After years of going by that self made mark I know that it's correct. The check oil light comes on at about a quart low. I add a quart and the oil level comes right up to the mark. I did the same thing that others in your threads have advised. Drained all the oil, changed the filter and filled it with the correct amount of oil. Even oil change places consistantly bring to my attention that the oil level is over the dipstick full mark until I show them the score mark that I made an explain it to them. The best I can figure is that Ford got lazy with their diptstick QA. The dipstick tubes on different cars were all of different lengths even though they were using the same dipsticks.

yah, dunt worry it went down, thanks, is there any drawbacks though, to having too much oil?
if you are over by a good bit, the crank whips the oil into a froth, and froth does not pump well. i dont know how far over you have to be in order for this to happen (Michael, thoughts?). i was thinking that a half or maybe even 3/4 over full might be alright.

If you just changed the oil it means the oil filter is empty so it will show high on your dip stick. The oil filter holds just about 1 qt...

Run it then recheck it.... I have never found the stock dipstick to be far enough off to worry about.

Perform this test on a level surface with all 4 wheels on the ground.

Fill the crankcase with 3 quarts oil, then fill the oil filter with oil and install it. Pour the remnants of the 4th quart in the crankcase. Start the car, look for leaks. Stop the engine, wait 2 minutes for the oil to drain back into the crankcase. Then check the level on the dipstick. Use a file or scribe to mark the 1 quart low point on the dipstick. Pour the 5th quart in and recheck the level. mark the dipstick again. Now you know exactly how much oil 5 quarts is and how much is 1 quart low.

This is weird... I never had this issue before until the vehicle I currently own.. But I just came across this about a month ago. I could have sworn it held 5 qts. I prob drained 1/4-1/3 of a quart out

Make sure you drained from both plugs, and the Ford Service Manual says the level is safe up to the Letter "F" in Full.
