Disappearing Odometer

Sounds like a loose electrical connection. Perhaps the connectors on the cluster are getting some corrosion. See if they're cleanable (most likely they are). I took my '98 out to check for a rattle and it wasn't hard to do. I can't remember the method of connection. My memory for this kind of thing runs together with a couple dozen different cars that I've owned (now 2001GT).

The usual technique is to use a contact cleaner like Miller-Stevenson, GC Electronics, Etc. Denatured alcohol is also good, rubbing alcohol in a pinch. If you use Q-Tip as an applicator be absolutely sure all Q-Tip hairs are gone before reattaching the connectors. Don't use an eraser as it leaves a rubber film on the connectors. Note that using a clean eraser is possible if you thoroughly clean the contacts with an alcohol based product afterwards.

The exact same thing happened to my 1999 Mustang GT. It went away don't know what caused it.
