So i finally got everything straight on my car and a buddy in his 86 GT wanted to cruise. So we did...then i asked him if he wanted to run it on the highway. So we were driving around and we got to the on ramp and as soon as i saw his brake lights go off i hopped on it in second gear and i blew by him about 4-5 cars on him. Then we slowed down and i slapped it in 3rd at around 3000rpms and we both went. Kinda dissipointed in my performance to say the least. We stayed side by side with my starting to pull very slightly.

Him: 1986 GT, 3.73's, 1993 Upper intake and TB/EGR , 14 degrees of timing, K&N filter, flowmaster catback.

Me: 1993 Lx, Trickflow upper/lower, 75mm TB and EGR, 12 degrees of timing, sn95 fuel rails with BBK regulator set at 40psi, JLT CAI, Underdrive pulleys, Flowmaster catback, gears unknown ( possibly 3.55's ), elect fan, a/c delete, and smog delete, msd cap/rotor, ford racing 8mm wires and fresh tune-up ( plugs, pcv, and fuel filter)

You have a long list there, but most of that stuff adds little or no hp. You have an intake and pullies on him, but thats about it. His car could be lighter weight and he also has more gear. And you did pull him, so it seems about right to me.

his car is lighter. his gears is his definate advantage. and most of your parts arent really performance there just better stock stuff. the only reall performance you have is the trick flow intake and throttle body.

Cool thanks for the reply everyone. Im deff. the better driver and he i had to edge him on to even race me. BEcause he thought he would loose. The first time i ran him from 2nd gear higher up in the rpms i crushed him. I held out to about 6000rpms and let the intake do its job. But youre right maybe too much air and not enough motor to use it. I have a F-cam and X302 heads with 1.6's in the basement that will go on soon then shortly after a Vortech V2-SQ.

are the 86 GT's really that much lighter than my 93 Lx ? The gears did the job i guess...he shifted much quicker than I did, seeing how his shift light lit up both of our cars. haha

He runs a 14.4 in thw 1/4 so im assuming i would be about the same.

The gears were probably a part of it.
You may have too much intake and TB for stock heads and cam, hurting your low end power.

That and the gears.....by the time your intake and TB are waking up, your heads and cam are running out of breath. I had the same problem running a Victor Jr. intake on my stock long block...it's just overkill.

Gears shouldnt help from a roll unless youre amazing at shifting. With lower gears hes going to have to shift less obviously. The small benefit of gears from a roll is negated by the fact you have to shift, unless of course youre really good at shifting. From a stop is a completely different story.

Sounds about right. It takes a big difference in power to really walk away from someone. You are probably making about 25 more HP than him...thats not going to make a big difference!

Jack up your rear end and count the number of driveshaft revs per one tire revolution. That will tell you exactly what gears you have in the car! 3.5 revs = 3.55s

Hey try this next time, this is how i usually get the jump on cars i race... You said you dropped it into third around 3K rpms, well next time, keep it in third at around that same rpm then when your about to go, downshift to second and put it to the floor...Not alot of people do this, they usually just stomp on it in whatever gear they are in. But im telling you, drop it into second hard, dump the clutch and hit it. Not sure if you guys already do this but i know nobody else i raced has done this, they always just punch it in the gear they're in.

yeah i spun the driveshaft in the air and it spun 3 and about 1/2 turns for one wheel revolution.

I dont think i would have dared ram it into 2nd at highway speeds. Not sure how much it would have helped especially if i was already close to redline, then i would just have to shift and take up more time. We stayed side by side from the punch up to the end of the rpm range i would pull up top. I'll run him again sometime down the line and let you know how it goes....In the process of tearing it down for a cam and heads with 1.6's.

With Ford Racing X303 heads, what is a good long tube to run. I was thinking BBK long tubes with a catted short mid pipe and who knows what catback i will run. Are there any cheap long tubes that still work good ?
