Im getting ready to upgrade my brakes and i have a few questions. Right now i have the stock 68 drum brakes, and im going to upgrade to some disc brakes. First of all i only want to do one set and then finish them later when i get some more money. Which brakes should i do first (front or rear), and what conversion kits do u suggest buying that are affordable (nothing to heavy duty, just the basic)? Please post some links if possible, thanks in advance.

Re

I would suggest doing the front first. I had drum brakes on my 67 fastback and just recently had them coverted to front wheel disc for pretty cheap. I even had my local shop put them on for me. I bought the kit from Dallas Mustang. It comes with everything you need. If I didn't get it from them I would go with Mustang Depot. They have great customer service.

Check out eBay for granada spindles if you want to do it as cheap as possible. If you do work yourself, its not a bad project. I think I have 450 total in my swap.

DO FRONT FRIST....its the only way to go. When I say this I mean, you often see disk/drum cars from the factory, but they are always front disk rear drum. I believe you will have some problems getting the balence right because you will have so much more braking potential (as in how well they work) from the rears. Especailly if you have worn front parts and new rear parts.

And I will say it once...use an adjustable inline proportioning valve so you can tune your car. They are only like $45-55 and you will not have to change your distribution block or anything else. Also, you will like this...save it, print it out and keep it close. Seems like everyone askes for it eventually!

I wrote an article a few years back in Hemmings Mustang Guides called "Whoa-ing Your Pony", and it covered exactly this!

Fronts first! Check out Masterpower Brakes. I used thier stuff, top notch!

mfp4073, why do you still run the factory dist. block? Maybe for the brake problem warning light?

Definetley do the fronts first, you may be surprised how well it all works with new rear drum set up. I went from not stopping at the end of the 1320 with manual drums to 100+mph stops using manual disc/drum relatively comfortably.

Left the distribution block cause well...you need one? Why change it? The drum/drum blocks dont do any proportioning...just send the fluid where it needs to go.

You can actually get all the parts individually and put a kit together. Most the kits available are true conversions, but I am almost sure you can easily part one together. Awhile back I put on a SSBC front disc kit on my car. I needed new grease seals and called to order new ones. The sales consultant said they were the same as factory disc. I was like no ****. Several hours later at a friends shop I found out every friggen part was off shelf item and was only $450 bucks. I was put together for $800 for the kit. The only part which needed to be order froma mustang parts house was the actual bracket which was a factory repo. Look into this before investing into any kit or junk yard conversion. I know specifically for 1965-66. I am currently looking into upgrading my 68 so we will see if the results were the same. Maybe Ill save some money.

As soon as you change to discs up fron on a drum car, the original distribution block/prop valve is worthless. Junkyard a Maverick or Granada piece, or buy from the aftermarket! (Insert another Masterpower plug here!)
