Dissassembling bottomend before I take it to the machine shop? What needs to be done?

Wednesday I'm going to start tearing down the engine and was going to tear it down to the bare block. Is their anything I need to do when removing the crank/pistons/etc.

Anything I need to do when untorquing?

I will be reusing the crank and rods.

I know I need to keep everything in order (caps, and rods used for the same cylinder).

Any other notes I need to take?

Thanks:nice:

I like to check the thrust on the crank before I pull it out...

Take a good look at all the bearings it will tell you how things were running. If you are runnig main studs make sure you give them with the caps to the machine shop, same goes for the girdle.

Yep, I agree.

I like to explain thru the title so it is more specific on who comes here.

Instead of putting: "ENGINE QUESTION"

Think about it...

So you know what your getting into before opening up the thread.

Less bandwidth used and more specific answers. A better reply to view ratio.

Once you pull the cap off you can tap on the rod to press the pistons and rod out through the top of the bore. I use a piece of nylon rod but you can use a butt end of a hammer.

Put some tubing or rod bolt protectors over the bolts so you do not hit and mark the crank or put a mark in the bore.

If you have much of a wear ridge at the top of the cylinder where the rings reach the end of their travel, you might need to ream it. If not, when you are hammering the piston out of the bore there is a good chance the rings will hang on the ridge and you can mangle or break the ring lands on the piston in the process. I've heard it said that if you can hang your finger nail on the ridge it needs to be reamed. Not too scientific so maybe someone will chime in with a more definate answer (or a spec). I remember reaming the ridge of one particular Dodge engine I had. That was one hot summer in a cramped garage. It's work if you have to do it by hand ! :nice:

I'll probably push it out thru the bottom if it is possible once the crank is removed. I'm sure the ridge reaming can be done when it is bored:shrug: There was a ridge about 20k ago when I did the h/c/i upgrade but not much of one.

Rick, just out of curiosity...does it matter which end they come out? I mean is their a negative to which way. The block will be bored and rings/pistons will be disregarded...would hit hurt to pull them out the bottom? Just safer to pull out the top right?
