about a month ago my car started just dying randomly on me. long story short, i had to replace the stator switch inside the distributor and to do so i had to pull the gear off and the shaft out of the distributor. after installing it, the car ran fine (aside fgrom the timing being slightly retarded) until about 3 days ago the distributor started whining and vibrating upon cold startup. after about 2 minutes of the car running it stops. can anyone tell me what this is or if it will cause problems? any help is greatly appreciated!

Take off the dist. cap and try to wiggle the shaft to see if there is any play. You should not feel much play at all, otherwise the bushing is probably worn out (I can't remember if our stock dizzy's have bushings or bearings, but you get the idea). If this continues you can and probably will experience problems (such as misfire, etc.) due to changing tollerences between the stator/rotating notched wheel and also the cap/rotor.

If there doesn't seem to be any play in the shaft, pull the dizzy and look for an abnormal wear pattern on the distributor gear, and go from there.

when my dissy let go it did the same thing and after looking at it I realized that the rotor was hitting the underneath of the cap because the shaft had play. take a look at the underneath of the cap and see if you can see marks from the rotor hitting it. I replaced mine with an msd and its been working fine since.
