For the longest time I thought the noise I am hearing was coming from one of the pully's, but have discovered that this wasn't the case. I ran the car without the belt the other day, and the noise was still there. Then, by accident I put my hand on the the distributor cover and the noise lessened. I continued to apply different amounts of pressure and in different direction on the cover and was able to get rid of the noise completely. When I removed my hand the noise returned. From reading some similar posts I am assuming its probably the distributor or part of the distributor.

What is the likely source that is causing the noise and how might I fix it short of replacing the entire distributor, or does the distributor need to be replaced?

Sounds like you're losing the bushing. A Ma and Pa shop might be able to rebuild it for you (a new bushing and PIP should have you going reliably again).

Otherwise, a turdy reman'd unit is the next best choice with budget in mind.

Good luck.

Beware of the reman'ed units. I was fortunate enough that the one I poked into my notch last year decided to die only 1 mile away from my house, so I was able to walk home and get a tow. Took me a week to figure it out, but the little magnet in the pickup coil detached itself and became lodged against the teeth of the inside of the dizzy.

Most reman companies don't usually change out the pickup coil in there unless that was the reason for it having been traded in as a core deposit, previously. They just fix whatever clearly needs fixing, maybe press on a new gear on the bottom, clean 'er up, and box it for sale.

Thus, if you do choose to go the reman route, peek and see that the pickup coil is new. I had to go to three different Autozones until I found one that did, and haven't had a problem with it, since.
