Hi All, anyone out there tackle the construction of their headers themselves? I was wondering if there's any design literature/tips available. My bucket-of-bits should be arriving before Christmas - should keep me amused for a few days....

I will be making my own race headers for a FE in my '63 Fairlane. Crites makes a set, but I'll be moving the engine back and will have engine plates so I think I can do better. I'm also not sure what heads I'll end up with, hoping for Tunnel Ports or High Risers and I think the Crites headers are only good for Medium Risers. I'll tack them together with my MIG then have my chassis guy TIG them up as I don't have a TIG. They will be individual tubes that slip/bolt to the collector.

I made my own headers for my 65 mustang. All I can say is be patient it takes a lot of time to make them right. I had no choice but to make my own headers because of the engine i was using and the size of the tube. I made 2 inch primary tubes to a 4 inch collector. Here are some of the picks from the finished headers good luck if you have any questions let me know i have built a few sets

Thanks guys, those pics look pretty good. I realise it won't be a 5 minute job, there's no rush. As of last Wednesday it's a 7 year project anyway!. I made the back half of the exhaust system a couple of years ago, and it goes exactly where I want it to. The engine is about 3" rearward from standard and I'm using an RRS rack so there's no stock headers that will fit.
start here with a flange kit from summit racing

then get some tubing in a variety of bends, from 45 to 180 degrees, in the size you want. you will also need to straight sections as well, you can get a few sticks of straight tubing in say 4ft lengths which should be more than enough. then just start fitting tubes, cutting as needed.
