Do I need a tune?

I know this is kind of a newb question but please forgive me, this is my first new car purchase and I'm not too familiar with how these things are tuned. I know I need to get a tune, but my question is, do I need a tune to drive it safely with the following mods:

jba lt headers w/off road h pipe
k&n aircharger
motoblue cnc 62mm throttle body

The head on my passenger side has started making a real annoying ticking noise (inside the head) and my mechanic buddy that installed the headers for me said it sounded like a lifter went out. Now I don't know a whole lot about the workings of an engine but why would something like that give out on a $30k sports car with less than 20k miles on it? Another friend of mine told me I could be running lean, (sorry, I don't know what that means) could there be any truth in that? Another thing I noticed is that after I had done all this stuff I filled her up with a tank of 93 octane, could this have also caused the problem?

The check engine light came on for a few days and then of course turned off on my way to the dealership. Do these cars have some sort of on board memory that stores information when lights come on? If so the dealership should have noticed that it had been on. Anyway, it came back on this morning and the engine is still making the noise.

The service manager at the dealership didn't put anything on their paperwork indicating that I had done anything to the car (headers) and basically told me to go home, put the stock ones back on, and bring it back, or drive it till it breaks down and switch them out and have it towed. Doesn't seem like a fair list of options considering how much I've spent on the car. :bang: Anyone else had any problems after modding?

I am going to probably swap the stock exhaust back on the car this weekend and take it back monday morning. The reason for the thread is when I do get the car back and put everything back on, should I go get it tuned asap in order to avoid any problems?? I'm a little frustrated right now, I'm not quite sure why headers would cause this problem.. crapola

Thanks in advance for your input

With those mods you definitely needed a tune. Get a tuner asap and hope you haven't fugged your car up. Not trying to be rough, but that's the reality. The headers alone, you probably could have been ok with. But the intake and throttle body definitely needed a tune. You have to be running dangerously lean. I'm suprised your CEL isn't constant. My tune was just a bit off at first, causing me to run just a few points lean, and my CEL was constant.

bottom line... you need a tune, and you need it yesterday, if you know what I mean.
