Do-it-yourself headwork......

I have some GT40ps that I need springs installed on and I was thinking about doing it myself. It doesn't seem too hard and I can rent the tool. And it would be cheaper for me to take the old ones off first if I took them to the shop so I might as well do the install too. Is there anything I should know before changing them?

Also I am going to have the heads retapped for 3/8" studs and was wondering if anyone else has done this themselves or should I leave that to the machine shop? I had to drill out and retap holes in heads and in a block a few different times so I have done it on automotive parts before but I am no expert. I'm just really on a budget. What do you think?

well as for the spring change, the only issue you will run into is setting the new spring for the specified installed height. I would highly discourage just removing old spring and installing new spring without setting the install height. As for tapping, thats another thing were you can easily drill and tap on an angle. Then what?

I would recommend against drilling and tapping the heads for the 3/8" studs at home. Have a shop do it. Way to easy to make a little mistake and have a rocker sitting on an angle.

And if it has to go to the machine shop for that you might as well have them change the springs at the same time. I put new springs on my P heads myself and it isn't hard to do but, like sbftech said, you have to make sure that you have the springs installed at the proper height. The spring kit that I got, the TFS one for iron heads, had a little tool to determine if and what size shims you need to keep the installed height at their specified 1.8"

the procedue of takin em off is easy putting em on should be as easy as takin em off but i duno how to set them up right so i just let my machinist do it, has lots of expierence and i dont! works!
