Do my seat belts actually work?

I'm replacing my seat belts and i noticed that neither the new ones or the old ones lock into place if you pull hard on them. This doesn't seem like it would be very helpful in a crash....thoughts?

They work on an inertia switch, and they only work proporly when mounted in the car (or mounted in the same position).

They should lock up when you JERK them out of the holdster, if not, they would be FUBAR.

i think there is some sort of electric sensing for them latching. as i understand, the black pin switch at the rear part of the door jamb (where the latch is) might need to work to have the belts function properly......i was told it is there for the belts....

just some info. good luck.

Really? I always thought that seatbelts worked on inertia. Cause man, if seatbelts were electronically locked in an "accident" situation and you had a short....that would really really suck. I'm going to have to disagree with you on it. I vote for the "inertia" theroy. Becasue the seat belt will lock if you "jerk" them even if the door is open and the car is off.

Mustang Seat belts are famous for they're loss of "spring" action...like they don't retract/rewind back in smoothly. As I see it physically in my own mustang and my friends 95 GT. Always wear your seatbelt. I hope you have a Torex kit handy. if those seat belts down work you could always go with a 5 point or 3 point set. =D GL

Definetly not electronic.. they work on inertia.

exactly, all the black button does is release the inertia switch so that the belt will retract when you open the door.

Yep it works by inertia. Try leaning forward when you sre accelerating hard. the belt will catch.

re-read what i said. i said nothing of them being electrically latched; i said it was for sensing of latching (which is true. when you open the door, it unlatches).

i mentioned the pin switch in case it helped with diagnostics. on other cars, the failure of the circuit has kept them from working properly (the inertia mechanism would not stay locked up due to the malfunction of the circuit).
that is all that i said - i said nothing of the belts locking being associated with the electronics. all i said was that it had to do with the latching (perhaps i should have said unlatching - but that has to do with the latching).

sorry if i was unclear or ambiguous in what i said. not starting a war - the misunderstanding appears to have been my fault.

so basically its bad that mine aren't locking up....anyone know if there is a way to fix them by perhaps taking it apart? I bought these down at the englishtown swap meet so they are by no means new but I'd rather not have to buy another set.

Get in your car, drive fast, (don't speed though ) and then slam on the brakes, letting your body go against the belts. They should lock up then because of the inertia switch inside the retractor. It is a manual switch, like a pendulum. The belt is not at all connected to anything electrical. I've done it a few times (voluntarily and involuntarily) and they have always worked.
