Do Superchargers and Mods add that much value?

I'm looking at getting out of the foxbody world and trying something new. I've had 2 lx hatches and 1 lx coupe and loved them all but, its time to get a different body style. I'm looking at 99-01 Cobras I love Cobras because I love the sound of the 32v motors and can't afford an 03/04 terminator.

My question is why do people think that mods add so much money to their cars? I've looked at a few Cobra ranging from 99-01 and those cobras are from 9800-14000. People put gears and rebuild motors with better pistons and rods and slap a supercharger and want like 17,000 for the cars? Do you think they are truly increasing in value? I think not! I think people expect it to be a investment and in fact its a money pit.

Give me your views on this.

People that add tons of mods and think they can just add it to the price tag of the car their selling are stupid. It's gonna sit for awhile until Joe Sucker comes along. My '93GT had $6K in aftermarket parts on it and I sold it in '02 with 54,000 miles on it for $9,000. My friends were saying I should sell it for $15,000 because of all the mods . I knew that was'nt gonna happen. I had seen quite afew 600HP Foxes selling for $10K and under so I knew that was out of the question. I got the $9K I was selling it for. First and only guy to look at it a month later. That '93 was cherry.

Take a look for some Mach 1's. The prices on them are dropping and you can pick up a low mileage one for less than $18K private seller.

Nope, doesnt add value.

Some people think it does, but in reality you will be better off selling a bone stock, or near stock car and getting more money for it.

People are trying to get their investment $ back, but the average bear can sniff out they are getting a car that has likely been abused hard (not saying stockers arent, but your much more likely to find a non-abused one). Plus depending on who does the work (shop? owner of vehicle?), it may or may not be reliable.

Therefore people dont want to pay any more than a stocker for a heavily modded car... unless you beleive in bought, not built.

If I sell my GT there are a few parts id put back to stock.

Ive seen tons of highly modified cars sell for nothing. In the last auto trader there was a 96 cobra with the full griggs suspension for 10 grand, and a 95 mustang with maximum motorsports suspension and a forged 331 with trick flow heads and intake for about the same. I wanted to buy the cars just for parts.

Cars are a depreciating asset. IMHO, adding power mods to a car enhance the enjoyment for the owner and adds very little to the resale value. They may get a few extra bucks but not much more. I would doubt if an insurance company would pay out any more than book value if a car was totaled with a aftermarket supercharger on it. There are always exceptions.

gears, stage II ect clutches, and often mid-pipes and lowering suspension all take away the value of a car. Many people are looking for a stock car, even modders

Things thats could help a sale/add to the price. Constant waxing of the paint, buying a car bra and using it, tinting the windows (nothing crazy), buying good tires and sometimes a tastful wheel combo (less likely), HID's, new upholstry, and sadly stereo as long as you dont go crazy

This car looks nice and is perfect for where I'm looking to go but, as he stupidly told me that the original owner blew two motors with nos and the second blew when he first bought it. So the car has it's third motor and he ran out of money building it. He says he still owes 16,500 on it and I don't know how that is possible on the car payment alone. So I'm guessing he refinanced the car with the motor and all so....

that doesn't mean much, what it means for you is he put in a teksid block (good for 800-100hp) and some good internals, which would be sweet for a project car. 17 is steep, but it's still a good car.

Yeah I know about the power plant and what it can handle and everything. I don't think its worth much more then the blue book and think he is just trying to pay back all his credit debt. I know the paint and interior isn't perfect 8/10 for both and that the motor has another year warranty which is good. I don't see paying anywhere close for that car.

I just hate how people do things to cars and expect so much more out of them. Its ridiculous they need to realize that cars are a money pit and when you soup them up that your not going to get that money out of them unless you find a sucker especially since this guy has only done a little suspension,gears,clutch, and rebuilt the motor to handle more which most people do anyway when starting a project. I would buy this car is it was like 12 or maybe a little more.

i have spent almost 50K in my car (including the 16K i paid for it) there is no way in hell i would ever get anything close to what i spent for it back. i would make more money by parting out everything and selling the car stock!

Hes right,I just got my 04 Mach for $16,900 in the 40k mile range,there is one right now in a Houston Acura Dealer with 32k miles and they want $16,800 for it,03 model zinc yellow.

Also my insurance company told me that if I do any modding to the car to take them the reciepts so they can make a copy,it adds to the value if its totaled....or at least thats what they told me.

You never get back what you put in....

Had a 1993 Rx-7, ending up going crazy because i came into some money right after high school and put an upgraded t-78 turbo, 2-row intercooler, full fuel system, full ignition, Apex'I Power FC stand alone, everything at a ton of money in it, and ended up getting like 16k for it when i sold it, the the stock motor was still in the car and was living on borrowed time kept the price down i still lost out in the long run would've made a lot more money selling all the pars seperate and returning the car to stock but really didn't want to go through the trouble and didn't have time it was worth every penny in fun but i wish i still had the car 400rwhp and 2800lbs car was ALOT of fun!!!

the only way you might be able to get a good portion of your money back is if you have all the receipts, every single last one, it has never been wrecked, it has a brand new paint job, it is in pristine condition, has a good amount of power, and the mods are all perfect meaning no jerry rigging, no half-assed work done, everything is perfect, wheels, windshield, spoilers, ground effects, etc. car is tuned with dyno sheet, and all mechanic work was done by a certified mechanic, and then you got the car appraised, you might get a nice chunk of change, but you'll never get back what you put into the car, unless of course you come across a really big sucker.

i've had a few off the wall offers for my stang and it's nothing special. just some rims, tires, bullitt sidescoops and a stereo system, and a few suspension mods. got offered $20K by a guy who wanted it and I was like um hell no, this be my car, my dream in progress, not for sale.

i coulda made $7K on that deal but oh well...didn't want to sell it anyhow.

Here's a perfect example of how mods really make very little difference. I paid under $20k for my 04 Mach 1 with 34k miles, 4k miles before I bought it the guy put about $20k worth of parts on the car. P1SC intercooled, 18" wheels, adj. shocks and struts, jet hot coated headers, catted X-pipe, drilled slotted rotors, gears, springs, mufflers, custom emboridering on the seats, stereo, etc...

I was just using your car and my car as an example of modifications not affecting the price by much.

Yes for insurance it can help you get more but it's pennies on the dollar. I know from experience my '04 F350 that was loaded to the hilt and over $15k in receipts got me $2500 back from insurance for those modifications. Allstate in particular has limits on certain things they will cover, like $1k in stereo, $2k in wheels and tires and they prorate everything. Anything over a certain amount and your premium has to be raised to cover the extra items.
