A crankshaft position sensor?
If not is there some other sensor that controls the firing of the car.
I'm trying to nail down a problem before I shell our big money to get it fixed.

on our stangs the (cmp) camshaft position sensor is housed inside the distributor and responds to a rotating metallic shutter mounted on the distributor shaft. this rotating shutter produces a digital profile ignition pickup (pip) signal, which is used by the (pcm) powertrain module and (icm) ignition control module to provide base timing information and to determine engine speed (rpm) and crankshaft position.

No. The pip is the equivalent, which is in the bottom of the dizzy.

Those answers are 100% correct. Just out of curiosity, what problem are you about to shell out big money for? Maybe we can help.

Ok well here is the prob i had a new pip installed and the car would not fire off so i went back and changed the ign mod back to the stocker and it still wont fire off the timing is set cause I drove the car for about 5 minutes when the timing was off. I went back to adjust the timing and now the car just wont fire off. Turns over fine just wont run.
I'm all out of options I was told by a mechanic to take it to an electronics specialish but he wants to charge 55 an hour. I'm thinking it would prolly just be better to take it to the dealership. They will know more about that certain type car and I would think they should have all the tools needed to make it run again.

Chris, do you have spark at this point? How about injector pulsing?

Is there a chance that you stabbed the dizzy in 180* out of phase?

Couple of questions ....

So are you saying you already replaced the TFI and the PIP? It's not necessarily "uncommon" to get a new PIP that is bad.

Have you tried to re-stab the dizzy?

no i have not tried restabbing the dizzy the mechanic said the dizzy was in correctly. I was just going by what he said. right now im tired of it. Its at his shop right now i may go down there tom and see if doing a 180* on the dizzy works.
It did however run for 5 minutes and drove with the dizzy stabbed like this. we are not getting a constant spark out of it sometimes its firing off sometimes its not.

based on that last post, the 180* out idea doesnt sound likely (if you drove it and it wasnt horrible, you should be in phase).

If you can nail down that you have injector pulsing when you dont have spark, that indicates the PIP is indeed fine.

TFI and coil would be likely items left.

One thing to try: When it wont spark, remove the SPOUT connector. If it runs like a top with the SPOUT connector out and gets inconsistant with the SPOUT in, that's telling.

Good luck buddy.

Chris, I already forgot: do you have 12 volts with the key-on, going to the hot side of the coil?

Here are a couple diagrams so you can see the pathways and what elements of the TFI should have what:

http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/tech/engine/images/94-95_5.0_EEC_Wiring_Diagram.gif

http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/tech/engine/images/TFI_5.0_comparison.gif

I'd want to know if the injectors pulse (PIP test). Then to see if the coil gets 12 volts. Or just test at the side of the TFI for what's missing. See if you have a ground pulse from the TFI to fire the coil, etc.

I'm just so tired right now, I cant remember what you've tested or know for sure.

another update!!!!!

I called Delk performance today (lebanon, TN) I knew there was a guy there (John) that knows just about everything about the 94-95 cobras. So we chatted and narrowed it down to the ECU and the dizzy itself.

Its possible the new pip could be ok but the dizzy itself is not. We also talked over the ECU.

I LEARNED TODAY SOMEONE OVER 5 YEARS AGO PUT IN A SUPERCHIP.

Wow what a suprise! thought I could take that thing out and fix the problem well no that didnt do a thing. So either my J4J1 is shot or the dizzy needs to be replaced.

There are no other options here as John stated!
One or the other will fix the car!
We shall see. I have to work the next few days in a row so it will be a couple of days before I can do anything.

As suggested above, if you pull the SPOUT connector and now you have spark, that's a sign that the puter took a dump.

The injector pulsing being present would suggest the PIP is good to go.

Just a couple quick things that might help John help ya out.

Good luck buddy.

JT, are you saying that you posted that for a reason? LOL, j/k guys.

Yeah, I'd definitely try test it (using JT's advice) before throwing parts at it. ECU's and dizzy's (IMO) are too expensive to just throw on and not fix the problem.

i'm working on a car that has the same problem. No spark at the coil. Has 12volts on the Coil +, Computer works in another car, ignition module works on another car. Replaced the internals of the distributor, removed the SPOUT no spark, So i'm for a loss. Right now going thru the wiring and not finding a problem.

If you have weak spark Chris, the puter is working (it just sends signals, not load-power).

Is the spark weak coming off the coil too? If so, the dizzy isnt the issue.

Good luck bud.

JT thanks for the info. I just remember the spark was weak and a new coil did not fix the problem. The dizzy better fix it or seriously I dunno this has just been horrible i've never seen so much go wrong at once.
