Like the title says, i'm just wondering if adding a k&n to a 99 GTP can net you over 170hp??

anyways, i was standing outside last night and this guy starts talking about how fast his car is... so i ask him what he drives. he walks over to a four door 99 GTP and pops the hood, and starts off about how fast it is. SUPERCHARGED!!! GTP he keeps saying. My girlfriend drives a 98, and the engines look identical, so i ask him what he's done to it. "Well, it's supercharged!, and i got a chip! and this baby right here!!!!", as he proceeds to show me his K&N panel filter! So i'm trying to keep from bursting out in laughter as i ask him if he's ever had it dyno'd since he (says he) has a chip, or been to the track. Nope, but he figures it's putting down about 405 to the wheels right now, and when he gets his new ram hood, it will probably add 50 or 60 hp. He keeps talking crap about how he can beat any DOMESTIC (why domestic?, i dont know) car in Red Deer (city of 80,000), and he hits 270km/h (i think around 175mph?) on the highway all the time without even realizing it. So i told him we should race one time, he's like "SURE!, what do you drive?" I tell him a mustang, and then show him my cellphone with a pic of the engine as my background. He THEN tries to tell me a mustang isn't a domestic, so i ask him why not! its a ford! "oh, well it's got those blue hoses and stuff on it" he says

anyways, i've been making fun of this guy all day today and last night, so i thought i'd just continue the fun!

If the guy actually knows what he's talking about a 99 GTP on the Supercharged ohv V6 makes about 240hp / 280 Torque. But that's brand new off the show room almost 9 years ago.

However, if he has the base model, yes dropping in a K&N might bring him around 170, because off teh floor they pull 160-175hp. He might see the same increase in hp/tq as anyone else dropping in a K&N and you wouldn't notice or feel it. No one goes 175mph and doesn't notice it. Unless you're high, drunk, or you're race car driver. It doesn't pull 405, he's a moron. Have fun with him.

Are you saying that it has 27% drivetrain power loss? They put down around 200whp, I thought..

A tuner, full exhaust that deletes the u-bend, complete cai (not just a panel), pulley and misc. other boltons can put them in the high 13s..or give them around 260whp.

This guy is obviously a complete douchebag. If you even entertained the thought that a K&N panel would ADD 170hp, you're just as dumb as he is.

just to clear this up... i know he's not putting down 405 rwhp. lucky if 200. he's a complete douchebag of a guy too. total slimeball. he was a friend of a friend at our table last night. i asked if he had done anything else like a pully swap or something that might make some hp, but he said all it had was only a k&n and a chip. my g/f has the same car ('97) and the manual says 235 fwhp, and the speedo only goes to 180km/h, so how he could look down and see 260km/h and decide he'd better lay off the gas before the cops get him, i don't know......

He failed to mention the flux capacitor that the 99's came with. I hear that with a bolt on Mr. Fusion, those things can put out 1.21 jigawatts. That would easily account for 405 whp.

Once he hits 88 mph, he's gone Really.

true, but running 1.21 jigawatts without a magnaflash expantion chamber or an upgraded flux capacitor could be catastrophic! if you raced him and his flux capacitor reached maximum capacity, nevermind you winning the race, space/time would be twisted all around and the universe would implode! GREAT SCOTT!

He must be workin with this guy that has this modlist

"Shortie Short Throw Shifter"
"60 or 65mm throttle body (I don't remember which one)"
"...and eventually going to put in the Vortec supercharger to bring out all the power, but when I checked for clearance got upset because they didn't clear and just did the works (But no supercharger)"
"You hear about all these kids whining about how they spent $3,000- $5,000 but that doesn't even come close compared to this. Try over $20,000 (I got ripped on labor too)"
Don't forget the roush 200cc heads the most powerheads made for the car

His guesstimate is probably right on. I would assume hes putting maybe 390 to the front wheels. But for the ram air hes probably looking at a 40-45 hp increase, not 50-60 hp. That guesstimate was a little high. I would be terrified of his ride dude. Its just a torque monster with the roots blower on there.

I hope he was joking.

He did have one thing right, the K&N filter does add 170 hp. 10 hp for the filter and 160 hp for the sticker on the air cleaner housing. I would imagine that mid-12's should be possible with that combination.

he must have the quad cam, tri-rotor, twin supercharged motor with the rotary forged chromoly pistons that was an option for that year.

No, not saying that at all. They're being marketed with the supercharger at 240. The low end model w/no supercharger pulls 170.

There is no non-supercharged GTP. Are you thinking Grand Prix GT?

Flux capacitor, nice ...have him adjust the Knuetin Valve, and a quick change of the taillight fluid, near 500HP. Nice cars, those GP's are, but this guy needs to put down the crack pipe and step away. Turkey, that ain't Tuna in the avatar, is it?
