When I am driving mainly in 5th gear but if you are driving and one steady speed where you have to pat the gas on and off the car luggs really hard. It feels like there is a gap between the gear teeth in the tranny or rearend. this may not be it just what it feels like to give you guys an idea. As long as I am accelerating or slowing down it doesnt do it just at one steady speed. Any sugestions?????

driveline slop?? Yeah that's pretty much common in all mustangs. It's just excessive slop you don't want.

Even my new GT does that sometimes. You just can't jerk on and off the throttle like that

when you tell the doctor it hurts when i do this, most doctors will say then dont do that! Dont pump the gas pedal like that. its hard on the drive line not to mention this is a manual car and the drive line is in direct connection to the engine, unlike an automatic car.

I am not jerking the car. I just barely hit the gas to accerate and jerks. I am normally driving it. Also it doesnt do it when the car is cold ( like I havent been driving the car more than 5 minutes.

I just sold a 92 car with the "factory economy" rearend.

It was a pig at highway speeds. But got fantastic mpg. Since you changed from an auto to stick perhaps your new gear ratios with the final drive ratio is causing you issues? The "When it's cold..." statement makes me think it's something having to do with fuel and ignition tho'. How's your TPS? Etc. Look for codes. That is also a strong indication your fuel pump is dying.

I am really happy with the 3:27 rearend in my AOD car now. Much better throttle response in all gears. But then I can only get 20mpg now instead of 25. Smiles are worth something.

Sounds like driveline slop to me. Your U joints are probably completely worn out. Change the u joints and see how it feels then.

Ya, I had a similar issue years ago. Turned out to be burnt spark plug wires.

Does it only happen in 5th gear? If so, I'd say it points to driveline slop, but if it's in any gear, I'd start going over all the normal maintenance stuff (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc) to make sure they're all in good shape and pull codes. If no codes, start going over the surging idle checklist in the useful threads sticky and see if anything in there resolves your issue. It kind of sounds like you're having a bucking idle at cruise.

When my ujoints went bad the car rode like the tires had flat spots on them from sitting but ONLY when it was cold and went away after I drove awhile.

And by cold I mean only sitting over nite as I live in FL. 4-5 miles of moderate driving and it went away. That should be pretty easy to determine just by turning the driveshaft looking for slop without replacing them. $$

Of course I've been wrong before and wasted money in the wrong place only to have the real thing bite me in the ass late at night in the rain.

I've had bad u-joints before which appeared to have no slop with the car up on jacks. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there. U joints are cheap, and if he hasn't replaced them within the last couple years, he should anyways.

.002" on each u joint plus the backlash in the rear end gears

.002" + .002" + .006" + tranny slop = jerking.
