Seems way out of place in a Mustang forum, but does anyone here commute by bike ever? I'm sure someone her does, despite the love for the car :D I started commuting by bike to save on gas money and help with my fitness level (and it's a huge stress reliever). Now don't confuse me with the hippies, who do it for . . . other reasons. I talked to a guy who's commute is about the same as mine (18 miles each way) and he's been doing it for 14 years  He's in his late 50s and in awesome shape from biking alone. I figured if I biked 4 days out of the week, it would save me $117/month :nice: Maybe it will help me save enough to actually get my Stang running again.

My DD has been my Bronco for the past couple of years and I'm totally sick of driving it and constantly spending money on maintaining it just so it can get me to work and back and haul some big things from time to time. The way I see it, I should be able to make the truck a TOOL and the Stang for FUN and the bike to get me to work and back and for errand running around my area. If I commute by bike 4 days a week, it cuts my annual miles by almost 50% on the vehicle and should prolong the tires/brakes and engine maintenance BS. Gas AND maintenance accounted for, it should easily save over $2,000/yr.

Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else here does this. :OT:

if i did this here in florida I would be a bucket of sweat by the time i got to work , and probably would stink to high heaven...there wouldn't be a deoderant in CVS that would hold the stench.

i rode my bike to work for 15 years. it was about a 6 mile ride each way. i had a locker at the gym (i worked at georgetown university) and once a week i would bring 5 sets of work clothes and stash them in the locker. then i would just ride straight to the gym and take a shower before going to work. that was when i was in the best shape of my life.

then my office moved almost 20 miles away. that was when i got my first stang. now i'm a fat mofo

18 miles one way would take me 1 1/2 hours to ride ... i don't have that kind of time in my life right now.

Right now I do it in about 1h10min. I do just take a shower at the gym next to the office so it's not so bad. I may need to do what you described and just take sets of clothes to work. That's a good idea, I'm not sure why I never thought of that.

I did when I lived in Germany, (Air Force) started right after 9/11. I was on leave, then got re-called, had to be in @ 0600, figured I'd get their earlier cause of the elevated security and time to get thru the front gate. Well, pulled up at 0530, and the line was dead still. I happened to have my bike in the back seat, pulled off to a parking lot and rode in. I was one of three people to make it in on time. Rode my bike almost every day after that. I lived on top of a mountain over there, got to work in 23 minutes, all downhill, use to race a german dude driving down the hill every morning. Going home was another story, 'bout 40 mins to get up that dang hill...awesome workout. That ws my mountian bike, after a few months, wound up buying a road bike, you can pick this thing up with your "pinky" finger...started beating my german buddy down the hill, and my record was 12 mins door to door. Kinda stopped rding a bicycle to work now, live to far out and got to much take home stuff, locker at work isn't big enough to hold it all. On days when I don't fly, I ride my Harley in, if that counts....I;m moving soon and looking forward to finding a way to start riding my bike back and forth again

John, you remind me of a certain EE professor (who commutes on a bicycle).

If you do this in the summer, I wanna see your kidney boulders. Been there..........

I have nothing to add - I thought this was going to be about riding motorcycles. That I've done. Riding a bicycle sounds like a real PITA. :D

Good luck with it. Worst that happens is that you realize it sucks or get run over.

ah ... back fo the future ... ?

20 miles in 1:10 ... 18 mph ... that is a good pace.

i was happy if it averaged 14 mph.

then again, i imagine Phoenix is fairly flat? DC is a very hilly place.

i tried it once when i was 19 working 6 miles away, then i bought a mustang and i just couldn't pass up the fun. that and there was just too many damn hills...

now its a 30 mile hike one way, ain't no way in hell i'm even trying it.

Yeah I'm actually in Tucson, but yeah it's fairly flat. My house is about 600ft higher than where I work downtown, so getting to work is quicker than getting back, it's about 15 minutes longer to get back. I think by the time I can afford a road bike, I can make it in under an hour each way. I'm just rolling on my old mountain bike with road tires for now so it's a hog.

At 30 miles, you'd be superman in no time if you did that ride! That would have to be a once or twice a week run, it would just take your day away.

Dang, we should start a poll to see how many people have had their license suspended before.

Haha I was thinking the same thing!

Bosko5.0 mentioned riding a BMX to work and back. I have a friend who rides only a single speed 29er (29" wheels instead of 26") mountain bike. I took it out on a 10mile trail ride . . . man did my legs hurt after that. He commutes on a single speed road bike which is kind of crazy if you ask me.
