I don't know specifically if an original top loader will bolt up to a t5 housing. However, I do know that the original Tremec 3550 was designed based on the original top loader. The Tremec 3550 and the models that came after do require a different housing. Unless this is a track car, I would get the five speed Tremec.

I agree i would go with the tremec and no the bellhousing will not bolt up to the 4 speed. But you can get one adapted not sure from where though.

The top loader bellhousing bolts to the Tremec 3550 & TKO models. A Tremec 3550 or TKO is the best deal for your dollar.

After reading this I remembered that the Tremec uses the same bellhousing as the early foxes that came had the SROD 4 speed. Maybe you can try to find someone parting out a 79-83 1/2 that has that trans. But to tell you the truth, if you keep blowing up T5s, you may want to invest in a scattershield.
