Does the 99+ 2v motor have a 6 bolt or an 8 bolt crank?

I am pretty sure that the 99 and 01-up romeo's had the six bolt and the 00 windsor's had the eight bolt. But I have also heard that their are oddballs out their, that are backwards, I guess they used whatever they had on hand at the time?

I think you can look at the 8th character in the VIN.I think X is romeo, W is windsor. This may not be right, but I remember hearing it

Yep your right. :nice: Although I have a windsor block and heads with a 6 bolt crank. only real way to tell is to open it up and see, but mostly all GT's have a six bolt and all Romeo's.

Ok, the 99 & 00 GT's had windsor engines 01+ have Romeo. Most if not all Mustang GT's with manual transmissions and Windsor engines have 8 bolt cranks.

p.s. there is some mixed information on the automatics

what's the difference between the two? are there any performance differences? are the differences just in the block?

No performance differences, but the 8 bolt crank is desirable for strength... for added performance. Kinda like Viagra

There are lots of little differences (pins vs. bolts used in construction, pressed on vs. bolted on sprokets, etc.) between the Romeo and the Windsor blocks, if you want the details do a search online. Some people feel the Windsor blocks are stronger, part of this is is due to the fact that the Windsor blocks are usualy used in light trucks and Romeo's are usualy used in passenger cars. The reason the Windsor engines were used in the 99 & 00 GT had to do with a shortage of Romeo blocks due to a fire at the Romeo plant.

p.s. The 01+ Romeo engines have a slightly higher compression ratio than the 99 & 00 Windsors, this caused many of the first 01's being supercharged to blow up due to the tuners not being aware of the compression change (again adding to the feeling the Windsors are stronger)

99-00 Stick have a 8 bolt crank , don't know about the automatic cars .

Look on the left valve cover and you will see a sticker saying Windsor Canada and it will be a 8 bolt crank.

Looks like the Windsor was made for the F150 and they ran out or engines at the Romeo plant so they borrowed some from the Windsor one .

They have Romeos from 96 up to 98 , 99-00 Windsor and back to Romeo for 01+ ..
