Does the computer get any temp info from the gauge sending unit?

The reason I ask is because I just changed the temp gauge sending unit to cure an inaccurate gauge but it appears that a surging idle problem and a stalling when shifted into neutral at speed problem have disappeared. I haven't quite enough to verify that they are gone but it seems awfully coincidental.

Not from the gauge sending unit. It reads it from the temp sensor itself.

This is all indeed true. Andy, your gauge's sending unit had nothing to do with anything except for the gauge itself.

FWIW, the differentiation:
The gauge uses a sending unit or sender.
The temperature sensor for the computer (ECT) is a sensor.
