Does the dash come out?? + paint Q?'s

I Want to paint the dash, doors, and back seat panels over spring break, Glossy polished black. So I figure I need a base coat clear coat type job. I have never painted any type of auto panel, but I am patient and want to do the job right. I plan on sanding to bare metal and Im using a paint gun, gonna see what I can do about filtering the air. So heres what I think I know. I need to clean w/ acetone or somthing, I need to use a metal etching primer, spray multiple light coats...thicken up a little in end coats. I dont really know if i need to thin the paint or use a hardener. Got any more info?? Im gonna go to a few places tomorrow to see if I can find more info and get some supplies

Also, I have some pretty messy wiring that needs some attention and having the dash out would be most helpful. I was wondering if it even comes out?

I don't know of any way that the dash comes out unless you want to weld it again, I do know that most of us paint the dash while it's in the car. Just cover everything else and go ahead.

You don't want to sand the door/quarter panels to bare metal, they are stamped if you look closely, you have to use paint remover to remove the old paint, unless of course you don't want it then go ahead and sand it.

Yea I didnt figure it came out. The texture can be sanded out? I think Id rather have it smooth.

umm i believe it can be sanded out especially with a rougher paper, but i'd wait to see what the other guys say or try doing a search quite a few of us have done interior painting.

My car was media blasted, but when it went to the painter he just primed it like all the other panels on the car and then b-sanded it smooth.

If you just sand off the paint (which will leave the paint in the texture) clean them very well, primer the doors, sand them as if they were a body panel it will come out smooth. Looks way better IMO.

well i got my dash out. but of course mine is a 73 mach1. but i bought rattle can paint from mustang unlimited which seems to be worknig great so far so we will see.

i used a paint stripper wheel to get the paint off the doors and dash of my car. It's the kind that attaches to a regular drill you can find at any hardware store. It's not wire brush type wheel, the teeth are actually about 5 inches long and the size of wire coat hangers.

I used a coarse one then a fine one. Worked like a charm but the stamping is in the metal. don't think it can come out.

Well I did it. Turns out the texture in the metal is pretty much perminate and not that delicate. I used two wheel type tools to remove the paint both were fitted into my drill. For a majority of the paint I used a hard porous wheel that looked like it was made of lava rock type material. That left paint in the bottom of the texture. I tried using a chemical type stripper but that didn't help too much. So I used a pretty fine wire wheel which took all the paint out and left me with beautiful clean bare metal. Then I sanded all the wheel markings out with 320 grit, cleaned it, and shot primer. I ran out of time to paint (gotta go back to school) but up to the primer I give it an A+.

Valley82, that door looks great. I would love to see a bigger picture though.
