Dollar bill to the tail pipe.. WTF?

I was talking to my friends mother today and it turns out she was a mechanic for 20 years. She told me that if I held a dollar bill to the tail pipe and it was blown away, I had a healthy engine, and if it was sucking in, I had a poor running engine....

WTF?!?!

Now i've heard of sticking one on the oil fill hole to check for blowby, but this one just seems to far fetched for me to believe.

Well, I'd imagine if your exhaust system was sucking air in backwards, you'd have some kinda problem there

There is some truth in this tale, as it dates back to carb only cars with no computer. If the dollar bill flutters and never stops fluttering , all cylinders on that exhaust pipe are firing. If it drops, then one or more cylinders are missing.

A cylinder balance test using the computer's built in diagnostics is a much better way to test a 5.0 Mustang.
