I was looking at an auction for a set of DOOE heads. In the auction is says "These heads would work great with the factory size valves, or even better with larger 1.94 and 1.6 valves added." what is required to change valve sizes...these heads pretty much set as they came off the car and need rebuilt, but the guy has a buy it now for $85. i figure another three hundred and I could have a decent set of heads for under $500. I would like to have a good set of aluminum heads, but they are way out of my price range...any suggestions on what i should do...

edit:
it also says they are 58cc chambers...

Putting in larger valves requires new seats and some other significant machine work. Its NOT CHEAP! If you did that, your $500 budget goes out the window like Wiley E Coyote tossing an anvil off a cliff. Personally, I think the stock size 351W valves are perfect for a 302.

Ass/u/me-ing that the heads aren't beat to death and you don't need screw in studs, you can do it with stainless 351W valves for under $500. If you convert it to screw in studs, you'll come verrry close to 500$.

I have a set of very nice 75 351W heads I'm doing for my '66. Ported by me, new Ferrea stainless valves, screw in studs, springs matched to the cam. I'm looking at about $320 in parts, plus a little machine work which will be expensive since I live in BFE.

Oh, and 58cc, not unless its modded!

blkfrd, do you have any 1/4 times? I recently sold my '69 351w heads to a local guy and he's putting them on his 331 and I know he has a Weiand Stealth, but I don't know what cam. It's a race only car so I don't think he'll have a full exhaust, it's a '90 LX hatch. He bought, I think a 750DP and the car has a G-force tranny, he hasn't gotten gears yet, still has the 2.73s.

Well, I had the C90E's on my aluminum rodded, 12.7:1 289, but I think with those heads, it was closer to 11.5:1. Tunnel Rammed, dual 660's, full roller, it ran a best of 11.08 @ 119 in a 3000# Mach I with a Jerico, 5.67 gears an a 9x30 slick. We launched at about 6200 and shifted and crossed at 8000. We had started out with a Mallory Comp 140 pump, but were starving it on the big end and switched it out to a BG 280. The heads had been ported and polished and bigger SS valves installed. When I sold them, I included the Crane 1.6 Roller Rockers as well.

I'm confused! They bolt onto a 289 or 302, but need mods to fit a 351? Did I read it wrong? Just be careful. Valve guides on 36 year old heads are iffy at best. Rail rockers are harder on them than push rod guide rockers too. I would price rebuilding them from your local machine shop including parts. If you buy them, clean up the ports with a grinder for sure. I would leave some of the thermactor bump to act as an airfoil to cut down on turbulence on the backside of the valve. Think of a teardrop helmet of a road bicycle racer. The ones I did were horrible in stock form. Rigdes and parting lines left from casting were terrible.

yep.

But, you wouldn't have much downtime if you had another set of heads ready to be installed.

the ebay listing for the heads said that. The head bolt holes for 289/302 are 7/16", 351 has 1/2" bolts, so the holes would need to be enlarged a little to get 'em to bolt to a 351. You'd be better off getting a set of C9 or D0 351 heads, they have a slightly larger intake port and come with 1.84/1.54 valves, 60 cc chambers.

so stock do or c9 heads are 1.84/1.54? i think that in stock form that would probably be adequate for a street build if they were gasket matched, dont you? what are valve sizes on a stock 68 302?

289/302 heads have 1.78/1.45 valves. Only 351 heads have the bigger valves, stock. The 351 valves are a good size for a street build, but the exhaust port still needs some work.
