Progress Thread My centrifugal ppl, how’s this deal?

Rear seats mounted awhile back, been thinking about the door panels. Mine are 91 panels so it’s a fixed insert. Made a panel with some cardboard and wrapped it, gotta test it! I like it, but want to see what some upholstery shops would do or how they could do it. Could it be sewn on? Got to be a way don’t you think?

Went to a couple of shops and explained what I wanted but they seemed to not know how to do it. Probably bc I just said I wanted that area covered with material. Looking at some 88-89 panels I’m realizing they actually had the panel made sort of like what I made but surely not out of cardboard!!! Now I think I can show them this and it will be easier for them to do. One shop quoted me 250 / door which seems high imo. Another said 100 / door. Technically the guy who did my seats told me he would do it for free since the extended length of time he had my seats, and then not reinstalling the trigger releases. Just afraid that my door panels would be there for months VS a quick turn around. Started playing around last night, would covering the map pocket area be too much? I think i like it with just the door handle area but then I also like it with both area covered. What’s your all opinion? Guess I’d need to see it actually installed, as the checkered could possibly be overwhelming

Now that I have the panels out I’m debating on upgrading the original “premium” speaker! What could I replace this with where i don’t necessarily need an amplifier. Just figured why not while they are off. I don’t want to modify the speaker grill, I like the factory look, could a 6.5 fit in there and snug in behind the screen, or do I need to stick with the original size.

Technically 1990 door panels also have the removable insert as well. It is cardboard with the material just wrapped around it and glued. It's the same as the map pocket.

Personally i'm not a fan of map pocket deletes. I know the pocket it supposed to be there, so every time I see it is just looks like it got cut off and is missing, especially if you can see the snap. These pockets are easy to repair. $3 in amazon elastic and pull it through and good as new.

If you can score some door panels for a 1990 or so, it would be very easy to recover those inserts yourself. I think I have one out of the car to show if you want to see how I did it. But i did this as an amateur.

Ha I agree on the snap, I usually ignore it but when I see I hate it. I ripped my pockets out years ago as they were saggy. I like it with out it as it looks clean. Maybe I can just order new ones off lmr or something. I like the idea of covering them but then again I think it’s maybe too much. Are you arm rests recovered? On your inserts how did you tack them in? Also did you use some foam to puff them out sort of like what the factory did, at least on mine it’s seems there is.

Yeah, the armrests are leather covers from redline goods. I did the center armrest in leather as well.

I have an extra insert i can take pics of later. It was a practice one, but I can show how I attached the material to the insert and how it came off. I'll just need to get the pics when i get home

Thanks man I’d like to check it out

I did mine in a black tweed/hounds tooth similar to the factory material...

At first I used a thin layer (1/8” ish) of foam but it made it too pillowy (is that a word?) So I took it out and just used the fabric as the factory stuff was pretty well disintegrated.
I used spray adhesive and very small fabric staples to secure it.
Here's a few pics

Here’s the factory black tweed, and the extra one I recovered. I removed the original material first, and then recovered. Just pulled taut and stapled in place usuing staples that spread outwards.

It’s just a heavy IKEA grade particle board with the same metal clips as the map pockets. I didn’t put anything under the material

1990 was the last year of the removable inserts which is a shame because with custom seats it’s a great touch.

Nice thanks man, funny how mocking the cardboard seemed easy but tryin to do this myself, legit wise I always get weirded out. What was the board you used. Also do they sell the sound material that goes behind the panel itself.

Don't think I've ever heard of them... so the question is, how much of an audiophile are you? If you love music and really good sound spend the coin for the good stuff. If you don't really care and the stock ones are blown then just replace with whatever.

Deleted what I previously posted as it was meant for another thread and I had a couple tabs open in the browser. This should be a little more on point with regards to speakers and stock head units / amps.

If you are not going to change anything but the speakers you want a really efficient speaker as the stock deck/amp doesn’t put out a lot of power. The Harmony gear is not efficient and will sound “better” with an amp. You should look at the lower end Pioneer, JBL, Kicker, etc. speakers for stock replacements.

I found a really good explanation on this which I think will open your eyes:

“Speakers range in efficiency or sensitivity from about 85 dB (very inefficient) up to 105 dB (very efficient). To compare, a speaker with an 85 dB efficiency rating takes twice the amplifier power to reach the same volume as a speaker with 88 dB efficiency. Similarly, a speaker with an 88 dB efficiency rating requires ten times more power than a speaker with a 98 dB efficiency rating to play at the same volume.”

The Harmony R series range from 88 to 92 in sensitivity so they are not what I would call a stock replacement.

If it was still high school time I’d want my big ass box back there banging with a couple of 12s!! I ripped the amp out awhile back. Never upgraded the actual speakers was just about that bass. I’d like to run some alpine speakers but I don’t want to start getting all crazy with wiring up. I’d think these would be a good or better upgrade than the factory. I’d like to maybe get a little more bass at some point but surely never want to fill my hatch with a box holding 2-3 12s again! Seen talk in here about those flat low profile bass speakers.

My years of stereo experience have always led to you get what you pay for when it comes to electronic gear....
My original Mac gear was stolen from my home one day.. (Did I say theft should have the death penalty) I tried replacing it with some cheaper Jap gear and it hurt my ears.... I had to cough up the big bucks for new Mac stuff.......
Same with my car stereo... I remember getting a great deal on some car stereo at an " Electronics Fair" at some local event a couple of times..... No, it wasn't a great deal, it was money poorly spent on items that went in the trash......
Just saying this has been my experience.....

Decided to try them, easy plug and play. Clarity of sound is way better, these may not be the best but def an upgrade from the factory speakers!! My current problem is the bundle came with 5.25 and the hole alignment is off. I guess I could just drill new holes and screw them in? They just seem small, so I ordered some 6.5s, pumped went to install them and they hit the track for the window. Damn it!! I don’t want to remove or cute the speaker grill area, I want it looking original. Am I wrong about the 6.5s fitting with out spacers? Everything else fit in perfectly. Was shocked bc I cleaned the rear speaker grills and the front 3.5s, so much dirt and grime came off those things!! Probably years of armor all spray!!!!
