It looks like the '05's have locations for 2 pairs of door speakers - 1 pair of 6.5" down low in the obvious grille, and possibly a pair of 5x7" woofers directly above and recessed in the door? Can anyone set me straight?

I can answer my own question.

Yes, they do. I sat in one for the first time today.
This opens all kinds of possibilities for top-notch front stage with 3-way components.

Speaker Setup

The speakers in the front door are:

Stock = 5 1/2" behind grill half way up door, & maybe a tweeter above that. 6" x 9" in rear

Shaker 500 = 5 1/2" Behind grill, 8" Subwoofer in bottom of door
6" x 9" in rear

Shaker 1000 = 5 1/2" Behind grill, 8" Sub in doors, (2) 8" Subs in trunk.
6" x 9" in rear

I believe this is correct, but if not, it's close.

Are the subs pretty boomy, or tight sounding? Do they cut out the bass the louder you turn it up? That is the 1 thing I hated about the Mach 460. I wonder if swapping out subs and keeping them in that enclosure will sound better.

Kickerstang,They do not appear to cut out as the old 460 sound system did they rock and the bass sound like that of the after market systems. One thing I can't figure out I tried to add my xm radio reciever to the mach 1000 system today and lost part of the power to the radio no sound or radio functions just the clock and cd ejection will work.I even removed everytthing and put it back as before but still no luck gess its back to the deler.I don't think you will be disapointed by the 1000 I have been messing with car stereos for along time and it sounds good to me.

As far as I know...

Stock
- Door 5x7 (5 1/4" or 5x7 or 6x8 fit)
- Rear 5x7 (5 1/4" or 5x7 or 6x8 fit)

Shaker 500 = Stock +
- Door 8" subwoofer & Component tweeter

Shaker 1000 = Shaker 500 +
- Trunk 2 10" subwoofers

The Shaker 1000 will be a dissappointment to some people. The cost is high over the Shaker 500 and the bass is boomy, not tight and accurate. Listen to both before making the decision. Use your own CD's to test the systems with.

How did you guys get access to the rear speakers? How does the cover come up? Also, which wire is + / -? I have some kenwood speakers from my other mustang I want to install.

Ok, I'm an idiot. The rear speaker grills just pop off. On the bright side, I came across this sample master sheet from crutchfield, just so happened their sample was for a 2005 mustang. http://akamaipix.crutchfield.com/graphics/download/sample_0190011.pdf

With the Shaker 500, the door (upper) speakers are using what loks like a 4" mid and a 1" tweeter on a 5x7/6x8 mounting plate. I replaced these with some Rockford Fosgate P1682S Full range 6x8's. As for the door subs, I put in some Rockford Fosgate P18S4 8" subs. A little work to get them to fit, but by using a heat gun I was able to soften up the sub enclosure enough to "mold" the speaker into it just fine.

The rear deck I put another set of Fosgate P1682S Full range 6x8's and for low end I used a pair of Fosgate P110S4 10" subs running off a Fosgate P3001 amp.

The fronts doors (6x8's and subs) are running off of a Fosgate P4004 amp. I also bought 100sqft of Dynamat. So far the trunk, fenderwells and doors have been completed. I still have the floorpan and the tranny tunnel to go. It sounds awesome compared to the stock system. Funny thing is, even with the Alpine head unit (9847) it still cost less than the factory Shaker 1000 system.
