Door Speakers

Aside from SN65, where everything is a combination of stock plus new plus engineered, , has anyone put speakers into the doors of a 68 coupe? (I know his isn't a 68, or a coupe for that matter.) Were you happy with the way they looked and sounded? Better than the kick panel sound? Into the exposed metal or into the door panel where you could hide the hole if you wanted? Pix anyone? I've done the search and haven't found anything.

Yep, been there on the kick panel speakers and to my admitedly damaged ears, they still sound pretty cheesy with so little room behind the speakers for the volume of air needed to move.

No one in the doors hunh? Too non-stock for everyone? Maybe I'll be a trendsetter if I can figure out a "tasteful" way to manage it. Thanks.

Didn't door speakers come from the factory as an option? I'm about to add some Polk MOMO 4x6 plate component speakers in the doors of my mach. I'm using the factory speaker covers though to make it still appear stock. I don't have any pics of what your doors look like now but it may look ok with the 69/70 covers unless you are wanting to use the aftermarket speaker covers. Just watch the size of the speaker, cause the window regulator will hit the speaker magnet when the window is down if the speaker is too big. In my car, 4x6 is about as tall as you can get without interference unless you went with shallow depth speakers. You lose some sound quality with the low profile speakers though.

The only person I know that has speakers in their doors is "65 Fastback" and I think he did it because he put power windows in his car and decided to put tweeters in where the window crank used to be. I think your are talking more along the lines of a 6 inch regular speaker though. I don't see why it couldn't be done and I'd definitely be curious what the sound is like. I think most people don't want to hack up their doors to give it a try when the kick panels are close to where you'd put them in the door anyway.

Again, what the clearance from the top of the speaker magnet to the regulator/glass brackets when the window is down. The larger the speaker you choose, the higher the top of the magnet will be and the deeper the speaker will be. My suggestions would be to pull your door panel off, cut a piece of paper say 6" diameter and tape it to your door where you would like the speaker. Then look online for some speaker dimensions like mounting depth and magnet diameter and try to figure out where the magnet ends up being. Nothing worse than a 6" hole in your door only to find out that you can't roll your window down past 3/4 cause it is hitting your speakers. It has been awhile since i put my 4" round speakers in my 70 fastback, but i recall the window brackets nearly hitting my magnet. Again, this is a 70 which has bolt in window brackets and may be completely different than your earlier car. Did door speakers not come from the factory in 67/68? I see replacement speakers for 65/66 and 69/70 but not the 67/68. Maybe that's why you are asking if anyone has done it

Also, on the 69/70 cars the door panel stops about 4.5" from the bottom of the door for standard interior cars. I installed 4" round speakers without having to hack up the door panels. Not sure how far down your panels go, but IMO a 6" speaker in my car would look funny cause it would go partially into the door panel. Just some more things to think about before cutting.

67/68 Door Speaker came with the Deluxe interior.

They were a factory option; the grill is there on my 67 deluxe interior. I remeber they were an odd size 94x6, 4x7) but you'll probably have to do a litlle measuring. You should not have to cut holes; they're already there, unless you want to enlarge them.

Hole are only there if his car had the delux option. Standard doors do not have the grille and there are no holes in the door.

My 68 coupe is definitely not the delux model. At present it is away at the painter and all of my door internals are in a shed out back of my house. Whenever the century rolls around that my car is returned to me, I'm going to see what my possiblities are. I definitely want it to look clean and at the same time sound MUCH better than my kick panels.
