double clutching

doesnt a power shift from 1st to 2nd just blow the tires off 25th? You would think that on street tires it would be impossible to keep the wheelspin under control?! Even when i shift fairly hard (regular ole clutched shifting) i have hard time getting 2nd to hook. I would think that power shifting would make it even harder.

Here is the breakdown as I know it...

Double Clutching: Slowest of the shifting, was used long ago in big rigs more often than not. You start off in gear, when the time to shift comes, clutch in, pull the shifter into neutral, clutch out, clutch in, pull the shifter into gear. I guess this is used to help line the gear faces up in trannys without synchroes. Not something any new car needs, and not something used in racing.

Yep. Necessary with a lot of older non-synchronized trannies in big older trucks, and big trucks with worn out synchros :D. I've driven enough old farm trucks that I could put on a clinic.......

Yeah my friends 197x Fiat 500 (imported from Italy) has a non synchroed tranny, as well as my dads old Proshifted T5. The Fiat I learned to double clutch it right, the proshifted one I just slammed into gear.

On the street a hard powershift to second does spin a good amount, and I usually end up pedaling the car after. At the track until the last race the car spun for a second or so but didn't have any issues. The last race on my two street tire runs the car spun so bad, the first pass I thought I missed second or blew it up, put the car right onto the limiter after the powershift. The second pass I was prepared and stayed in it after it hit the limiter, and both runs were 4-5 tenths off what it normally goes. I just cant get myself to lift when I am racing the car, and like the last race, it had me running 13.5s because of it.

Thats what i was thinking. I could see the car never coming off the limiter after a hard power shift to second. Even with an aggressive shift the revs stay above 5 grand until the spinning gets under control...and at that point i need to shift again! I can really only see the benefit of power shifting 3rd and 4th. Unless you're on slicks and running a TKO with a built rear! At that point i think the tires would hold in 2nd.

On the street, slicks didnt hold second in my car at all.

At the track I didn't have issues until I hit an unprepped track. It was sticky right at the starting line, which got me a 1.96 60'. But the top of 1st through 3rd the tires were gone, and I ran a 13.50 when I usually go 13.0-13.1 with that 60'.

Don't feel too comfortable. I felt the same way for a while. My stock t5 shifted smooth as silk, never grinded, and took every powershift without a complaint. Until one day I slammed it into 3rd and ended up with half the teeth missing. Most people would learn at this point, but powershifting is an addiction, and without it you might as well drive an automatic. I will powershift the **** out of my new $1100 gearset without mercy. It's just how a stick car should be driven.

+1

if i'm just cruisin around, i drive normal. but anytime i race, all i do is powershift. the rpm's jump MAYBE 50 when i shift. whats the point of going "balls to the wall" if you're not really going balls to the wall?

My buddy's 475rwhp fox dead hooks 1st gear on the street with 275 bfg drag radials. It will spin 2nd once in a while with really cold tires for about 10-15ft with a hard shift. Definitely not enough to pedal it though, barely noticeable. It's all in tires and set up. My stocker spins more on the street than his car.

Yup and because I wasn't racing I went over and asked about the car, acting as the kid who didn't know. He told me full length headers and a cam about the same as a B cam. He was an arrogent prick, and next time I walked by I made a nice comment about nitrous not over coming a bad driver...

hey 25th, was the guy from mass and was it a gray lx hatch with a huge set of m/t drag radials on the rear? if its the person i think it is i know him pretty well and yeah he is a total douche bag.

Yes it was, real clean LX hatch, not sure if he was on DRs, but he was definately a DB. Tried playing it off like he had nothing, tried cheating, and lost the race. Amazing though the car on it's first pass ran a LOT different then the next few until elims, and then it was right back to launching and running hard, till the DB missed a few gears and lost!

I can't stand people who cheat to try and look cool, but whatever.

Do you know if he plans to run Tasca Day this year, or do yuo not know him that well?
