I rock:
McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise
ClamWin Antivirus
Webroot Spysweeper
LavaSoft's Ad-aware
Windows Defender

I do NOT use any peer to peer crap. Talk about virus laden. Torrents are the way to go.

Torrents FTW. If I can't find them on torrents, I use Limewire.

www.avast.com

Free virus protection. Works awesome.

Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-aware
SpywareBlaster

All are free and can be found on www.majorgeeks.net

Yep, I'm not a fan, either, by I have a corporate version from work for free. I run it as my active scan and run ClamWin as a backend passive scan.

Here is a good, free, online scan tool:

Power Management settings need adjusted so your PC doesn't turn off by itself; only when you ask it.

Do you know where to adjust them or do you need some advice on how to do it?

Download speeds have NOTHING to do with what CPU you have. It's all in the internet connection speed. He probably has a faster connection than you.

Exactly, or he's done some tweaking to his connection.

Now to answer your question of if you can "tune up" your pc. Yeah you can, but you have to be careful when tweaking the registry. If you plan on doing it manually, you need to backup your registry.

How to back up your registry

To manually change your TCP/IP, check out this web site:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/645/

Google Search for TCP/IP registry hacks

Or if you would rather have a piece of software do it, try Cablenut. I've used it before and it works pretty well (plus it's free).

If you need programs and stuff use torrents.

I personally dont like torrents because they take up alot of space and they always give me pop ups and ive had to reformat my computer because of it and just pretty much make it run slow. If I need a program like a game, or photoshop, or any kind of program I want I go to torrentspy.com, and use bit comet to download them, then right when their done I close the program as soon as possible and dont open it again.

If its for music, or videos I use limewire, Ive never had a problem with viruses or spyware. You can tell when a program is a virus, if it says photoshop newest version! and its like 121kb its obviously not the right one. But I only use limewire for downloading songs, they have everysong you need download it disconnect from it and you just listen to all your songs.

What ever you use your going to get spyware or have problems so just get what you need and get off.

There is a very small chance you will get any malware via torrents unless you knowingly download something that says, "Hey, I'm a virus!!".

Spyware comes from many other avenues, so it likely came in one of Microsoft's gaping wounds in the OS.
