Drive shaft broke at 125mph

Well I was on my way to a big run, bracket racing my street car when my rear drive shaft came apart. I just crossed the 1/4 mile line and it came apart. It caused me to swerve over and almost hit the car next me. Well and of course it destroyed my custom exhaust,mufflers and rear end. And for the great part a new drive shaft was only 720.00 dollars

might wanna look into one of those drive shaft safety loop things....

I want to see some pictures of this ride. I am dying to see what a 6-71 looks like on a classic Stang. I've seen one or two but I want to see your car.

PS - What did you ro what do you run in the 1/4?

as smart a$$ as that sounds, a loop is must with that much power or slicks are used.

Nice corral you got going there...

That motor must be putting out some serious power. What kinda times is it runnin?

I'm a true believer in going with a 3.5" steel driveshaft with 1350 ujoints on a car like that. I've been told an aluminum one will deteriorate. Not a believer of cf in this location either. The ds loop is a must...

I bought the heavy duty racing shaft, it rated for 1,200 H.P. Sorry it took so long to respond, works been tough, need the over time to pay for the shaft. I have a drive shaft loop but it was installed in the front, the rear broke. I think the u-jiont broke causing it to hit the ground and bounce back up into my car. It continued bouncing off the ground and hitting the car. Destroying everything.

That sounds like a whole lot of jack but you are pushing some serious HP. I bought my hardened steel fully balanced shaft from Driveline something in Vegas, just happen to run across the reciept the other day and it was $300 and they guy said it will take all you can throw at it.....

I still want to see some pictures of that beast when you have some time. I am contemplating my next engine build and I don't know if I want to go turbo, roots, procharger or just a big hit of nitrous...... I just know I want more power than what I've got...

Muddslide, Similer thing happened to my buddy at the track last year. He has a '69 camaro w/454, when he launched at the line he got a tremendous amount of axle hop which ultimately sheared the pinion gear causing the driveshaft to flip around the bottom of his car denting his new exhaust and floorboards. I'll see if I can find a pic.

washMO, Just decide on a new combo already and get yours pulled out so I can have a 347.

I saw a driveshaft break at the 60' mark and it hit the driver in the shoulder (after slicing through the car) and he walked away with only major bruises so consider yourself lucky you walked away w/o a scratch. Good job keeping it off the wall!

That really stinks. You buy a top dollar piece like that and the friggin ujoint blows. I hope you were at least running 1350's... Man you must be hookin!

You mean this one..... "thread highjack" - check it out, got my old port matched Vic Jr back on and my new Race Demon 775RS-DR. Needs some tuning as its a little fat, but she pulls a little harder.

When I had my '65 notch, I was doing a speed run and the front U-joint fell apart. The problem was that it didn't come all the way off an spun REALLY out of balance at at about 90mph. It whipped so hard it broke two of the front mounting ears off the main case of my toploader and wrecked both the yoke and the driveshaft.

I have to get a custom shaft with my turbo 400 and I went with hardend everything. I used the best company in the area, they do all the high hpcars in the area. It has a mark williams 400 yoke and 1350 alumimum spicers. I was lucky not to put the car in the wall at that speed.

man that looks mean buddy, turbo 400? You got a cheby trans behind that Ford? That you holding up your arms to show how high the wheels come up when you launch?

I have a truckshop do my driveshafts... I know its not hp ratings but they build driveshafts for 1000+ torque trucks..I figure they are pretty strong

Check the tranny for damage too. All that weight flopping around can cause some damage.
