If I am driving in first gear (only gear I have tried it in so far) and I left off the gas so that the car drives the motor, I will get a clunking noise from the driveline when I push the clutch in. This doesn't happen though if I push the clutch in before I let off the gas (not letting the car drive the motor). Is this normal, or a sign of a problem starting? If I am being to vauge here let me know.

First gear only eh...

Could be the clutch isn't engaged fully in first, worn out cog in transmission, worn out driveline (easy fix with new pins) couldn't give you a gaurantee on an answer.

The U-joint in the rear is new and I haven't had any problem with the clutch slipping. I am just worried that I might have yet another part in my driveline fail.

Check to make sure your ring and pinion do not have too much backlash in them, as they wear they can cause quite a jolt upon decceleration due to all the slop. You can tighten it up a bit if necessary also if you have the right tools.

Ok I went out today and disconnected the driveshaft from the diff. I then grabbed the pinion and was able to turn it back and forth some without the tire moving, so I am going to ask the diff shop to decrese the amount of backslash on it. I also grabbed the driveshaft and did the same thing with the transmission in gear and had some play there too, but not as much as the diff had (about 2/3-1/2 less). Is it normal for a transmission to have some play? If it is, does anyone know about how much and a way I can check to see if it is all in spec. Same with the diff too if you know.

I had a very similar problem when I first installed my T5. After eliminating exhaust and driveshaft problems I got underneath the car with a rubber mallet and started bumping everything until I found the noise was coming from my new tranny mount. The mount was fine but for some reason when I let off the gas and was descellerating the mount wounld vibrate. I ended up placing two thick washers in between the tranny mount and the T5 swap bracket and it solved the problem.

Does anyone have any comments on the amount of slop I have though? Whenever I shift gears I get a sudden jurk cause there is that much slop in the driveline (unless I let the clutch out REALLY REALLY SLOW).

My locker has about 1/8 turn of play in it. Lockers normally have more play than others. Didn't you try a locker not too long ago? Did you just put back in your old stuff? I know with a manual tranny you will feel the play in the rear between shifts if you had a locker. Since I have an auto I only notice mine going from park to drive. Do you have more than an 1/8 turn of play?

I'm from Livermore, just curious what shop are you having do you rear?
