driveshaft damage??

how can i tell if a aluminum DS is damaged?
are some small scratches ok?
to the eye,it looks very straight.

how bad can it be scratched up,but still be balanced?

its not my DS,just one i was looking at.

as long as it doesnt look like it fell off the car at 50mph I think it'd be fine. if you plan on going 200mph get it balanced

no,it has on small nic,half the size of a pinky finger nail.
should have took a pic

any other tip on how to check it before i buy it?

V blocks and an indicator, test rod and accurate level, best to take it to a machine shop and have it checked, other than that and your


I would at least take a couple of pieces of wood with a V cut in them to set the shaft in and turn to see if it has a hump.

As long as it doesn't have any serious damage it's probably fine. At worst it will need a rebalance and some new joints. The balance cost about $35 at a driveshaft shop. If it's a good price, it's a worthwhile gamble.

local shop quoted $70 to balance an aerostar aluminum DS we found at the JY.
the one im looking at is a great price,i'll have to think about it.
