my tranny has been shifting a lil hard for the past couple weeks. also when i would take off from dead stop i had a lil clutch chatter (car shook like i was not giving it enough gas to get the car moving). well i decided to drop the tranny before the problem screwed up a freshly rebuild t-5. i removed the tranny and noticed the throw-out bearing (TOB) was in bad shape. inspected further to find out that the TOB was grinding away the TOB retainer . i held the TOB in my hand and spun it. it almost wobbled out of my hand. so therefore i am buying new TOB, steel bearing retainer, new rear main seal, and i am having the flywheel resurfaced. the clutch disc and pressure plate have < 8,000 mi. on the combo.

***is there anything else you guys can think of i need to do while i have the tranny out?

the TOB was sitting on the retainer sideways causing it to grind away at the retainer. when the clutch fork pushed the TOB against the pressure plate, it was only contacting half of the pressure plate.

***could this have damaged the pressure plate or clutch disc?

none of the 'fingers' were bent or broken.

Make sure you shim the steel bearing retainer correctly. If you don't it will cause premature input shaft bearing failure.

ive never had to install a retainer. do the shims come with the reatainer? are they already behind the retainer? where can i get the shims?

as long as there is no contact between the reatiner and the input shaft then there should be no problem right?

i've just run the shims that were on there with the new retainer and have never had a problem, however if you want to be safe, do a search, there should be plenty of info on it here.

I'd re break in the clutch. it could have worn in unevenly, and not be grabbing all the way. take it easy for a couple hundred miles or so.

I can think of 1 thing you forgot.

Get yourself a new "Pivot Ball". This is what your clutch fork slides onto and allows movement and a restraint. I recommend getting a replacement that is "Non-Adjustable" therefore you wont have to worry about adjustment.

It should be around $12-$15 and well worth it if yours is still stock. Trust me, they wear.
