well I recently got to drive a 98 4.6 gt 5 speed..vert..all stock...it felt faster than my 5.0 but the speedo proved it didnt move fast...didnt seem to have much low end torque like my 5.0...id guess there probably about as eqully slow being it was a vert and a 4.6 and i have a 95 GTS thats auto...it seems like my 5.0 has way more umph than the 4.6..which had about half as many miles on the engine as well...made me want a 5 speed though....or maybe ill swap my 3.23's for 4.xx?

Non PI 4.6 are dogs and dont take well to mods untill you do a PI head and intake swap. The 5.0 has WAY more torque down low, the 4.6 likes to rev. Drive my 4.6 and you will feel totally different, nice torque on bottom with alot up top. I can spin the tires all the way through 2nd gear and a bit of a slip in third :D

Even just the intake/cam swap will wake'em up some if you don't feel like changing heads. My 96 put down 221 rwhp w/ an H-pipe, PI intake, and a tune.

I've since went back to pushrod and DD the 96............:D

Last time i was at the track i destroyed an '04 GT and i was honestly very surprised and so was the other guy. We talked afterwards and he said he's smoked cars that were faster than mine on the street and thought i'd be an easy kill at the track. We both agreed that it was pretty much torque related and that on the highway it would be a different story.

I can't wait until the other notch of mine if done. I want to take both to the track and get slips for both of them. That will be interesting. a 4.6L notch vs a 5.0l notch. Same mods....but the trick here is that all the 01 stuff is in a lighter body.

yeh my comparison was my stock 95GTS aode(3.2x?) vs stock 98 GT vert 4.6 5spd...I pretty much figure the 99+ 4.6 will smoke my stock 5.0. Oh what is PI? I dont know all the mod motor lingo?

I knew the 2v Sohc werent the best to mod so I got my 5.0...funny thing is its been all stock minus magnaflow mufflers since I bought it a year ago

If you wanna get serious with it, do a web search for Modular Depot...the guy there is named Ken and at one time his 2 valve car was the fastest all motor 2 valve in the country. He can help you make a nasty 4.6.

PI refers to "Performance Improved" which came in the 99+ GT's. They have different heads, cams and intake and make 260HP and 302 ft-lbs of torque.

Yes the 4.6L has no torque down low, but it does have torque. You need to wind it out to get the car to move. They are awesome freeway cars. Take a 99+ GT with stock 3.27's for a spin on the highway and you'll fall in love with 4th gear. It will pull hard to 140MPH.

I ran a 14.1 @ 98MPH with my '03 GT bone stock. The PI 2V responds well to mods. A TB/Plenum and full exhaust can get 270 rwHP easily and make it a solid car. Mods are more expensive, but the heads are far superior to 5.0 stock heads so they respond very well to little mods. The 4V's respond even more due to the extra set of valves.

They are not heavy either. My GT weighs ~3400 pounds. My LX weighs 3200 pounds. That means put a passenger in my 5.0 and you have equal weights pretty much.

The 4.6 is not a slow car. You can even slap the 99+ heads, cams and intake on the 96-98 Mustangs and have 265-270HP stock due to the increased compression with the domed pistons. Toss on a TB/plenum and exhayst and there's your 300HP with bolt ons. WIth the 5.0's it's little tough to hit 300HP flywheel without touching the heads

Take from the few in this thread that have or had both at the same time:)

Weighed a BONE stock '94 5spd/coupe - 3,380 lbs with full tank of gas.

Weighed a '00 5spd GT with 17x9 chrome wheels - 3,337 lbs with about 5/8 tank of gas.

Weight is VERY similar between sn-95/new edge cars.

The 4.6L makes peak torque 100 RPM higher than a 5.0L.

The reason why stock 5.0Ls beat stock 4.6L (PI) are because of bad drivers. Torque is not the issue at all. I got 2.0 60 fts, stock with a '00 GT 5spd.

95% of the time at the track you are above 3,500-4,000 RPM. Look at the MPH as well.

I added '02 H/Cs/I to my '98. It woke it up a bit.

To the OP, 3.23:1 is a GM gear.

yeh i know that the 99+ 4.6 are faster stock than my 5.0...just stock that 98 4.6 seemed like a dogg even with the 5 speed...could have been the extra weight of it being a vert?

Back in highschool I had a 95GT VERT auto. 3.27 stock gear, Flowmaster cat-back and an h pipe. I lost to my friends Dad's 98GT VERT auto. BONE STOCK..

I lost everytime.

Now a 5.0L fox 5spd car would do much better because they are lighter than the SN95's and had better intakes, exhaust and had 10-15 more HP from the factory.
