dss motors good or bad

i heard good and bad things about dss not sure if i should go with them or not. any info would help me make up my mind. anybody had any problems with them. i only live about a half hour away so wont have to pay shipping.

Hmm I live a half hour away from tom also If you knew them back in the early 90's when they were in lombard you probably woulnt buy from them, but It's a totally different shop now in st.charles

I don't know anything about the quality except what i hear, which is mixed at best. However as far as i know they are basically just a refinished stock block. In other words it will still break at the same power levels, not any stronger than a stock block.

I agree to a point with this, although this is the same for about 99% of all crate engines on the market, save for the expensive kits which use an aftermarket block, which typically adds a minimum of $2-2200 across the board to the price of the kit. This can be said for all of the popular crate engine manufacturers like CHP, DSS, FRPP, etc.

I didn't mean to make it sound like they were the only ones that redid stock blocks, like you said, most companies do, unless your going with a Dart style block.

well my friend baught a 331 short block from them and after driveing the car for a week on its break in time it hammerd a rod bearing and they told him he was sol. i dont know if i would buy a short block from them.

Don't buy from them. Just Junk. Go with a dart block. I think a 331 was something like 3,000$ I think.

From what I've heard mixed reviews people who have had problems with there motors. (A few that I've heard of). Have had there problems taken care of frmo DSS.

DSS also builds dart block shortblocks for the people who are saying just go with a DART.

Depends on your budget. As long as your under the magic 500 # the stock block will do you fine. 5.0 & SF had a good article on crate engines a few months back. It covered DSS, Fox Lake, Keith Craft, FRPP, and a couple other companies. Check it out at their website

you get what you pay for. the dss will split right down the middle and the only thing that will hold it together is the girdle. also heard too many customer service horror stories after only driven the engine very few miles

Stay away from DSS. I would be one of those horror stories. They are a bunch of scumbags and screw you over with the quickness. Have a real professional build it for you Im sure there are a ton of them on this forum. Good luck

i plan on ordering my shortblock soon. DSS was one of the places i have considered. i do hear quite a bit of mixed feelings about them tho. i also considered CHP. havent really heard anything bad from them.

any CHP guys wanna chime in?

Theres one thing you need to remember, we are dealing with high performance parts. I dont know of anyone with any type of warranty on performance parts. I guarantee I can blow up anyones short or long blocks built by anyone. Just by doing some silly **** after I received shipment of it. If the consumer screws up, do you think he will blame himself or just run to the internet and scream as loud as he can on every forum?

These engine builders have no control once YOU receive shipment of it. Not to mention if its a shortblock, does the consumer have a clue as to how to build the rest of it? I am not sticking up for tom at DSS but think rationally here. Find me one engine builder with a 100% track record and I will show you the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Amen. When I have my next motor built it will be by Rick for sure. He stands behind his stuff and is VERY reputable.

I figured I would throw my 2cents in. My buddy had a 306 in his car. This motor ran it was a 10 second car on all motor.. As far as reliability I don't know he sold the car. But they told him when he bought it to beat the S%$# out of it befor the warranty was up and we did and it held up real well. So i don't know about all the horror stories but I do have those facts.
