Dual carbs on a 289?

While browsing around the internet doing some "window shopping", I saw that Edelbrock makes a dual carb setup for a 289/302 motor. My first thought was, "that would look cool...", but wouldn't it be way too much carb? Can anyone explain what kind of setup you'd have to have for a 289 to really make good use of 2 carbs?

(For the record, I'm not really looking into buying this, I was just curious... :) )

dual quads look cool, but aren't much for performance. A proper sized single carb with a good intake has been proven to be significantly better on most street oriented engines.

I remember an old Car Craft article where they had some mild 350-ish chevy buildup, maybe 377 or 383 stroker. It was built to be a solid 400 hp engine, they tested several different intakes. One was a dual quad setup, the others were performer rpm, I think a weiand stealth was in there, and a few others. each setup was dyno tuned and the results compared....the dual quad lost out by I wanna say 14hp to the nearest single quad setup, the best single quad made close to 30hp more than the dual quad.

The new Demon 6-pack setup claims 15 more horse than their single carb package, and they are starting to tool up for 302 fords. They look cooler than hell, but they are probably way too much for even a 347 version of the 302.

dual quads are good for show, and for all out racing. with the current crop of dual quad intakes available for the small block ford only allow you to use the edlebrock performer carb or the similar carter carb. the holley 4160 carb, even the 390, are too long to fit. proerly tuned, AND using edelbrock's progressive throttle linkage, you can get pretty decent fuel economy, as long as you stay out of the throttle.

This is probably the one you're talking about....here's the link

The Demon setup sucks......... $2400 ? what kind of **** is that? You can buy a NEW repop Ford intake and three new Holley 250's with the linkage and aircleaner from Mustangs Unlimited for $1350 ( shipped) And don't tell me the Demons are over $1000 better, that ain't gonna wash. I'm running just such a setup now on my 331 stroker in my 89 Ranger. The sound of those 3 250's at WOT is awesome. Performance is also, far better than a single carb. The WOW factor is also. Mustangs Unlimited also sells the repop Ford 2x4 setup too with either two 390's or 450's(Holley's) for $100 less.

Does it suck because it is expensive or because it doesn't work?

I don't remember endorsing it either way.

I just posted those numbers in response to the posts previous that stated dual quads make less HP. Not all multiple carbs make less HP.

The thing that annoys me the most is that there are all these multiple carb set-ups for 302s and nothing for 351s, which may benefit even more from the extra carburation.

Agreed. There were a handful of multi carb intakes made for the Windsor back when it was first introduced, but the Cleveland overshadowed it & no one back then gave the Windsor any thought as for being a performance engine. That's the reason you don't see the assortment of intakes for it, that you do with the small blocks and FE's. You could always build your own sheet metal intake then you could mount anything you want.

guess you have to go old school to make them fit huh

LOL, heaven forbid you want a hood!

The Demon setup is freakishly expensive, that is for sure. Maybe the price will come down when they don't sell. I'm thinking there are enough hot rod guys that will spend the dough, though.

These guys are willing to spend 50k on an all-steel 32 3 window body, so a couple grand for wow factor under the hood is a drop in the bucket. I honestly don't know a single stanger that would drop that kind of coin.

I kind of prefer the 3-2100 set up.

I too agree with this. The 289/302 crowd got the dual 4 port, and the FE guys got this: http://www.orwell.net/~hptrends/4sale.htm The Tri-Power. :hail2:
We 351 Windsor guys need sumthin' extra too... :damnit:
As for that HP trends setup, all I can say is " if you have to ask them the price, you can't afford it" You'd do better just buying the small block setup from Mustangs Unlimited and swap the carbs and linkage to a used 3x2 FE intake. The HP setup uses reconditioned carbs, Me? I'd rather the Stangs Unlimited NEW carbs, I've already once tried to deal with 30+ year old carbs, it ain't fun.

What are you saying? Is it possible to get tri-power or dual carb setups for the 351 Windsor ?
