Dumb question... what oil?

Hey guys, I know this may be a dumb question but hear me out. I've got a 99 GT and she's up for her first oil change since I got her. The thing is, the previous owner used mobile 1, 10W-30. The mobile wesite says it should take 5W-20. What do you guys use?

i use 5w-20 synthetic Mobil 1.....imo just use what has been put on their from th ebegining or wait and see what other replys you get

i'd use synthetic, mobile1, royal purple, amsoil, whatever. ford switched recommendations from 5w-30 to 5w-20 a few years back to up their fuel milage #'s. something called COLA? anyway, they used to recommend 5w-30, but changed it to meet fuel mileage regs. i think it would be fine to switch to 5w-30 or even back to 5w-20. how many miles are on it? you want to consider that.

just over 94K on the clock. does the oil affect fuel mileage that much?

I've worked at a lube shop for over 2 years and I use 5w-20 Full syn Quaker State. I used to use 10w-30 full syn but I tried the 5 20 and it seemed like the engine revs smoother with 5w 20 so I would go with that. I've heard where I work that its only like 1 gas tank a year that lighter oil saves you. It's probably not hard on the car to switch brands or weight. I'd just do what you want then stick with that. I'd also stay away from amsoil we've used that stuff a couple of times when a customer brings it in and I personally don't think that it is a good oil. Anything else would be fine.

It wouldn't hurt to use what the manual specifies. (5w-20)
Whether you want to use synthetic or dino is up to you but I personally use 5w-20 Mobil1 for the peace of mind.

Oil weight doens't affect MPGs drastically, I'd say 1 MPG tops.

i wouldnt let Quaker State or Pennzoil ever go near my car. i use Mobil 1 5w30 in my mustang. ford specified 5w20 purely for gas mileage, there are no internal clearance differences. you can use either 5w20 or 5w30. i would not use a 10wXX as that is too thick when cold.

The thinnest oil you can maintain adequate pressure at hot idle with is what you should use.. on an engine 5-6 years old (I'm assuming nearly 100k) you should probably run 5w30.. synthetic would be better, but regular dino would probably be fine too.

i think i am going to go with mobil 1 full syn, either 5W-20 or 5W-30. do you guys have any opinions about the new 15,000 mile oil? it's only a few bucks more for that stuff, so if it actually lasts 5 times as long, i'm going to get it. it just seems funny to me that the oil filter is only supposed to last 7,000 miles (the one i bought already), but the oil is good for over twice that.

maybe im old fashioned, but my engine never goes over 3000 without new oil and filter. i think the manual even says 5000, but i'll spend the extra cash to change it two more times each year.

i'm the same way. even though some people say synthetic can go for 5000, i'm changing it at 3000. that's why i'm a little weary of the 15000 mile stuff. maybe i'm over-cautious...

mobil 1 5w-30 and motorcraft filter here. i change it every 5K miles.

That 5000, 9000, and especially 10,000 mile claim is pointless.
Yes, perhaps the oil may last that long before breakdown through viscosity.
But, it still gets dirty and needs to be changed.
Do it every 3k!

Yeah I use this now...used to be Motorcraft from the Ford dealer but I started doing it myself now going fully synthetic with Mobil 1 since the Motorcraft from the Ford Dealer is just a synthetic blend

the mobil 1 15k oil will actually go 15k miles. that is if you use the Mobil 1 15k mile filter with it. porsches, bmws, mercedes regularly go 10-20,000 miles inbetween oil changes with no ill effects. if you feel like it, you can change the filter every 5k miles and add a quart of oil to the mix. or else use Amsoil and go 30k miles inbetween oil changes. of course having your oil analysed is crucial when doing this.

Theres a lot of people that go way to long and when they do come in and we drain the oil its VERY black, then when we put new oil in and check the dip stick it's still black and dirty. Change it every 3-4,000 miles regardless of the oil and filter. I'd say that any oil would work fine, but you shuold probably stick with 5w-20 or 5w-30. That Amsoil crap and oils like it are a joke. Mobile 1, QS, Valvoline, oils like that are what you should use.

cool, ive been working with motors for about 5 years, amsoil is fairly pricey, however if you have a large capacity application like a psd, duramax, or cummins, it is definately worth it. also if you use a big rig its worth it. or its good if you have a wife/gf who neglects service on their vehicle.
