During moderate to heavy braking my brake light turns on.

what could it be? low brake fluid?

Most likely low fluid. Check that first.

i can just open up the cap and put some in right? also, what kind of fluid should i use? does it matter?

I hear urine is the best possible fluid to use. Just pop the top and go to town
