I noticed the dust cover on the tranny that covers the hole where the cable goes into the tranny is missing. What kind of problems can this cause? If dust got in there could my clutch slip or squeek???

Don't worry, I don't have one either

It's not a necessity but isn't the greatest thing not having one.

A squirrel could store his nuts in there and be castrated when you start it up, fix it right away!

Does it squeak when you press and release the clutch with the engine off? Or does it squeak as you start to roll when taking off?

I don't think I've ever had a dust cover on any of my manual, or automatic cars.
Extra weight. Bah.

It only squeeks when just taking off in 1st gear. Just as the car starts moving and the clutch is just partially engaged it squeeks for a second. This only happens once in a while and that is the ONLY time it happens

Sounds to me like your clutch disc is worn out. When the rivets that hold the friction material to the metal disc start contacting the flywheel it makes a squeaking noise. Thats the sound of your flywheel getting groves in it. Dont take my word for it, get it checked out. If you dont take care of it real soon, you will need a new flywheel in addition to the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.

that cover can't weigh but 1 lb. tops - it's plastic!

Could it be maybe that as you start going, the sound of the wind/exhaust start drowning out the squeek and it's there but you just can't hear it?

Nope. It doesn't do it every time. I'd say once every 10-15 times I start moving.

If the disc was worn out that bad wouldn't it be slipping really bad???
