I have narrowed down my choose of heads between the E7 Power Heads and the Thumper Heads. I decided on these two heads for cost, but mostly for OEM look. Both of these heads will except all OEM parts and install without any issues. I am going for the sleeper look in my stang.

I will be running the heads with a B Cam, 1.7 rockers, and a Extrude Honed Factory Upper and Lower Intake, with a FRPP T5 trans with a 2.95 first gear and 3:55 out the rear.

Here is what I would like to know.

+Performance wise which of the two heads is a better choose?
+Which head has more torque and HP?
+Does any one on this board run these heads?
+What times can I expect from these heads?

I have decided to go the sleeper route because I was in a race at the track last week with a 91 LX stang that looked bone stock except for the exhaust. The car skirted the 1/4 in 12.33 @ 113 MPH naturally aspirated and still had all power accessories and A/C still in top working order. The only thing that signaled it was fast was the 4 point roll bar that still left the back seat and hatch usable and the flowmaster exhaust.

I talked to th owner after the race and he popped his hood and everything looked stock including the air silencer. I asked how did you get those times, you running NOS, he said no I have a lot of work done. But it is mostly internal so I can keep my sleeper look. He told me he dynoed at 318 RWHP and had the dyno sheet in his glove box to prove it.

Needless to say it impressed the hell out of me.

I'm not quailifed to guess at power numbers or which head is better, but your planned combo sounds well thought out and balenced.

You can save about $200-$300 by going with a FRPP Cobra intake. Out of the box it'll flow almost the same as the Extrude Hone stock intake for less mony. Almost every Mustang is slightly modded, so it could still slip under the radar as a sleeper.

Also I've had 3.55's and I currently run 3.73's. With the Z spec T5 you will definitly want the 3.73's. 5th gear is 0.63:1. Might even want 4.10's. I know if I went to the Z spec, I'd go 4.10's for sure. Overdrive might not be very usable with the 3.55's unless you are out on the highway.

I have nothing but good things about thumper heads. I was going to go this route but I am on the west coat and shipping would hve been a lot more (cant afford to much in the military) and power heads are on the west coast. By reputation alone they are both good heads and probably make about the same power. I have chatted with thumper on here and he is totally cool and will help you with whatever you need. He has a lot of experience so dont be afraid to pick his brain if you go this way.

If I remember right about the Power Heads they use the bigger Gt40 valves....which is better for high end HP and the thumpers you can get with stock valves for great low end torque. In my opinion tq beats Hp every time...as long as you can get it to the ground.

With your 2.95 first gear you will really be wanting a numerically bigger gear like a 3.73 or with your planned mods a 4.10 to take advantage of the mods.

I have Thumper Heads and TMOSS Intake. I dynoed 170 hp at 4200 rpm's and 240 tq at 3200 rpms stock on my 86 Mustang. I am getting my car dynoed and tuned this Saturday and I will post numbers after that. Cool?

very cool, I would be interested in seeing those numbers as I want to run the same setup. I think I might go with thumpers too since he seems very personable. Tmoss is great too. I need to see if he has any ported cobra or gt40 intakes laying around though.

Dude you need that car tuned badly. I put 228 in my 86 at 14* initial timing, with stock 87 heads, stock 86 upper and lower, stock 87 throttle body, 1 5/8 Mac Eql shorties, offroad H w/ mac catback, and an underdriven crank pully. Everything else was 115k miles of stock.
This was running a peak a/f of 17.0 : 1
That's lean as hell so my setup wasn't happy
Something is really really not happy in your setup.

Hey dilhole. I got my car dynoed before any mods. Dynoed stock. I call B.S. You told me you had a 87-93 upper intake on your car before you tuned it. That's at least 5 more hp.

Haha, dillhole. I misunderstood and thought that was your dyno with the heads and intake. Glad to hear I was mistaken. And yes, I originally had the 87 upper installed, but later thought better of it and put the 86 back on, before the dyno.
The larger 87 upper isn't good for anything because it too is simply held back by the lower. With the smaller 86 upper low-mid power is slightly better due to higher velocities.

You can still have a sleeper with lots of mods, I just don't open my hood. When people ask what I have done, I just say a cone filter and long tube headers. They says it sounds good, I say thanks.

I have Power heads on my 351w motor and 302 motor and I can vouch they are great heads. The 351w runs 12.1 naturally aspirated with a C4 and my 302 makes 405rwhp but with the help of 10psi of boost. Never-the-less the heads worked great. The Thumpers are the cheaper route and would work great but i decided on the PowerHeads since they are C.N.C ported and I've had nothing but good luck with them. Either way you go you will be happy!! Good Luck

I recently purchased a set of Thumper heads, the porting work was a thing of beauty, just awesome, with Thumper heads you get a 5 angle valve job (an important aspect of flow - though I'm not an expert by any means) and Mike is a great guy to do business with - and most importantly, my car just friggin' HAULS! I cant wait to get back up to the track and hopefully get this puppy dyno tuned.

I have powerheads on my car. Pulls like a beast from 3k-6k but I lost a lot of low end. The heads look great though, very smooth, uniform runner sizes.. To be honest for a street car I would recommend keeping your stock valve sizes for a little more bottom end, but it's always a tradeoff.

Extrude hone of the stock upper and lower is going to set you back in excess of 500 bux.
The stock upper will flow enough to support 210cfm heads, and Tom Moss can port the lower for ~150 and your intake is done.
Light bulb goes off... the money saved would buy a custom cam...
I have seen some good numbers out of Powerheads on a few different boards, and have heard a very repuatable head porter/cam designer say good things about Ralph Pici's work.
Recently I've seen a repuatable cam designer say good things about Greg's E7's. Not done any searching on his work however.
I've not ever heard anyone say they were dissatisfied with Thumpers product, or the service...
So, I've looked at Powerheads competitiors, and I cannot find performance numbers that are competitive... maybe there are folks running hard with Thumpers or Greg's, I've just not come across them... yet.
At this point, I would pony up the extra bux and go with Powerheads... (as well as the Tom Moss lower, stock upper, and Buddy Rawls custom cam which all sit in my garage).

Actually, I think I'll look at Greg's stuff a little harder before I decide.

Good luck.
