After getting my first speeding ticket I decided to get a radar detector. Coincidently, when I got home I turned on the tv on that hsn shopping channel and they were having an info on a radar detector for 60 bucks. At first I'm thinking it's too good to be true, but I decided to give it a try since they had a money back guarantee.

I have to say that I'm surprised at how effficient this cheap RD is, once I caught a signal from 2 miles away, and it has saved me on many other occasions. The only question I have about it is its longevity. I've only had it for 6 months. Has anyone else here purchased this radar detector?

I only go with more conventional means of radar detection . . . . . . meaning the person riding shotgun.

Try going down a long stretch of road thats flat. In those two miles he would of already gotten you.

And the longer space you have between you and the cop the better. Because if he does an "instant on" out of your radars range, you'll never know what got you.

Cops in my neck of the woods have turned to nothing but lasers now. I think I'll get a laser jammer seeing as there still legal, acording to our wonderful government

The ticket is not your problem....its the fact that you live in Quebec.

I didn't realise it(radar) was illegal in Quebec...there not here in Alberta!

yes you can get a laser jammer type thing, and yes you can get a radar scrambler (when they hit your car it scrambles their signal...)these are still legal in the US in most states. However think of this. you are a cop sitting on the side of a road you shoot this car and your radar messes up and you get the feeling this guy thinks he can beat you...you pull out and pull him over for any little nit picky thing he does. and legally he can pull you over for following you for 1/2 of a mile if you maintain a constant speed.

I never said two miles was the radar's limit. It was merely an example.

I have a cobra and its worked descent. My buddy had a cheap WalMart whistler that was 30.00 bucks and it picked up the radar before my cobra did though. I was kind of pissed, my 140.00 detector got beat by a 30 dollar special. Even with my dissapointment though, its still kept me from getting many tickets.

What do you mean "legally he can pull you over for following you for 1/2 of a mile if you maintaing a constant speed."? are you saying the cop can pull you over just b/c hes been following you for 1/2 a mile? or is it if you follow him? i dunno...that just confused me.

following you...if he's behind you and he maintains a constant speed behind you for 1/2 a mile he can pull you over for speeding. (at least in the state of florida.) I took him to court on this and I lost. and i had a lawyer. (i was up for reckless) '

moral of the story. don't depend on your radar detector, keep an eye on your rear-view mirror as well.

LOL this is cracking me up. After working in patrol cars for a few now through an internship here is the truth. We would randomly turn the rada on and off going down the road and go around corners and clock people as they drove the opp direction. We clocked nearly everyone speeding but we only pulled over 2 out of like 40 speeders. Thats only because they were going way over the speed limit and they still got off. Just wanted to let you guys know that you prolly get clocked for speeding a lot but the cop was prolly waiting for something faster or was doing something else while he had his radar on. I am tired and i know i just rambled random stuff for a while but all of the info is there

Ok.......radar detectors are only good if the radar is used in a constant fashion. THe instant on radar will not set off a radar detector unless the cop is checking the speed of a vehicle ahead of you, and you "may" luckily get to slow down in time. Laser detectors are essentially useless because they are mounted on the dash. Lasers (I only have experience with the LTI 20/20 and Ultralite), are aimed at the front grill of the vehicle, between the headlights. This is the most reflective area of the vehicle, aside from the rear. Over a 1000' span, the laser beam is only 1' tall. A laser detector will not be set off. Your best bet is to get a good jammer. Even some of the jammers don't work with older radar models. I know that a MPH industries K-55 (X band) will still pick up the speed of vehicles that have a Phazer-Jammer.

Hope it helps
